San Diego and Laguna Beach Camping???

My wife and I are going to meet our daughter and her husband on April 13th in San Diego and go camping with them for a week in their Airstream trailer.

We could really use some suggestions for Campgrounds and campsites that would be good for us. We love to be by the water. The airstream is a 27' unit.

Also what sites and attractions do you folks recommend for those of us who have not spent time in the San Diego and Laguna Beach area?

Or even things that are beyond those two locations. Eventually, we will be travelling back North with them towards the San Louis Obispo area.

Appreciate any and all suggestions. TIA, John S.
  • Highly recommend Doheny state park and Crystal Cove state park. Both will accommodate the 27' Airstream. Doheny has row of higher price campsites right on sand. Others very close to sand. No hookups there-but dump station. A few restaurants within walkable mile or so. I like quirky Olamendis (Día de Muertos art etc. etc.)

Crystal Cove Moro campground just north of Laguna Beach. On a bluff about 150 ft. above sea level overlooking ocean. Terraced campsites with some ocean view, some with water and electric-for that matter don't think you'll fit in the dry sites. Very scenic and beach is bit of a walk. Javiers' restaurant is pretty good and Laguna Beach has some unique non chain restaurants and attractions. I'd check Yelp and see what appeals to you.
  • We checked out the Crystal Cove CG and liked it but we have yet to stay there. On the other hand, we have spent many days at the same beach (Reef Point).
  • In San Diego if you want ocean camping there is Carlsbad and San Elijo state Beaches. They fill quickly so you need reservations as soon as they open for you time period. Check the California State Park website. There is also Silver Strand State Beach, but it's a parking lot.

If you want to be near the attractions in San Diego such as Sea World, the Zoo,etc then you might consider Campland by the Bay, a commercial CG on Mission Bay.

There are also numerous San Diego County Parks with camping. They are not on the water though. A very nice one, close to attractions is Sweetwater Regional Park.
  • Doheny Beach sites along where site #89 starts, are literally on the sand!

    Here is a map:

  • Wow, looks like some great campgrounds. Thanks so much, Any more suggestions are really welcome also for things to see and do in the San Diego area.. Thanks again.... John S.
  • Doheney is quite good. We stayed there once. Be aware which spots are dry and which have hookups when you make your reservation.

Doheny is all dry camping, if you are trying to get in there on a weekend good luck. Weekdays you will have better luck.

And yes some of the sites back right up to the sand but $65.00 is a bit spendy for dry camping.

  • April isn't as crowded as summer-does depend how the spring breaks fall. Every school seems to be on a different schedule. Mid week not as bad as wknds. I would recommend reservations at either Doheny or Crystal Cove as soon as you can make them. If you arrive early at either Doheny or Crystal Cove, they usually won't let you into your site. But they will let you into the big parking lots-ocean front one in Crystal Cove (all are near beach in Doheny).
