West Coast to East Coast Route?

I will be traveling from Monterey Bay, CA to Freehold NJ beginning in late March, 2026. I am concerned  about the driving conditions and weather. GS won't even give me a route (can't be routed because they are too far from any roads), and AAA is sending me through Wyoming, Nebraska and Chicago on I-80. I am thinking about dropping down to I-40 to avoid snow and ice, then heading north when I hit I-95 on the east coast. I am not in any hurry, but would like to get there in April. Any ideas?

  • Roflmao!  This could maybe have been a valid question before the internet could tell you every road, every road condition and the weather ahead of you 2 hrs, 2 days or maybe predicted 2 weeks ahead…

If you are not capable of driving in the snow or just don’t want to drive in the snow, then check the weather a month from now and decide which way to go.

It could be dry and above feeezing across half of I90 like it has been most of the winter and a blizzard on I40 in NM and AZ on the same day a month from now.
Asking now, aside from being needy or paranoid, is like asking for next months winning lotto numbers. No one knows.

The reality is, they struggle forecasting the weather accurately a day or two in advance of an event.

  • I-40 is OK. Personally, I would not go all the way to I-95. I-40 in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina is bad. Constant construction and they are still still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. I also hate I-95 from Richmond on up. I get off of 95 and drive up the coast. Not as fast but a whole lot less craziness and traffic chaos. You would have to take the Chesapeake Bay bridge and a ferry from Delaware to NJ. You don't mention what you are driving/pulling. I have seen travel trailers on the ferry.

Thank you for understanding the question, and giving me a thoughtful answer. I am driving a 32' Class C, and am NOT familiar with ice/snow (I am from Florida).  Back in October, I drove from Fla to NYC straight up 95 with little problems, well, with little unexpected problems, which is why I thought of hitting 95 again. I will keep researching, and check the weather before I actually head out in March.
