Any time.
x2 on this one
Camping in the summer is too easy. Camping in February is the best time IMHO. That said, I've only winter camped once in the UP, but plenty of times in the Northern lower. After the first ten feet of snow come down, it's all the same really :P
Hitch up the snow mobile trailer to your truck camper and head UP, great times - dodge_guyExplorer IIWe were up there last july right after the 4th. it was COLD! I would say late July and August is your best bet!

I asked a Yooper what did they do in the summer.
He told me that if it lands on a weekend, they have a picnic.
ALWAYS pack a sweat shirt (hooded, preferably) and a wind breaker. Bring extra light shirts that you can layer under the sweat shirt.
Don't forget to buy your "Say YAH, to the UP !" bumper sticker. - theoldwizard1Explorer IIOne of my favorite pictures was chunks of ice floating near the swimming area off of a Lake Superior beach near Marquette on Memorial Day a few years ago !

Summer weather is June-July-August, it can start getting cool and wet by September. If going into the woods, later is better, as more of the blood sucking insects that feed on you for reproduction will have completed that part of their life cycle. They are most hungry early in summer.
U.P. for me means the Lake Superior shore and iron mining country around Marquette, so I don't have references for other parts of the U.P. In Marquette I like the Travel Park close to the Superior shore.
All of the above. Summer insects can be relentless, even with repellant. Lived in Marquette for two years in the early '80's - make sure you get real pasties when in the UP. I know you have your areas picked out but if you've not already been there, Tahquamenon Falls - don't miss it. And from Munising take an excursion by boat to see Pictured Rocks in the early evening to sunset. Spectacular. - lbrjetExplorerWe went in August and had great weather.

I've been swimming in Lake Superior in July and have found it perfectly fine and I've also found it extremely cold. If it's a warm summer the water will generally be swimmable.
So have I, off of a large dock on Isle Royal (Boy Scouts). Jumping in took my breath away so bad it was hard to get back to the ladder !Parrothead Mike wrote:
If you're along the Lake Michigan shoreline you'll find the water great, especially after the 4th of July.
The area along US 2 west of St Ignace has some of the most beautiful pristine beach you will find anywhere in the world. They used to allow overnight "parking" in some areas along there, but I think they have stopped that. I don't think there are any campgrounds along Lake Michigan in that area.
One place I want to check out is Brevort Lake. There is camping there. - Big_KatunaExplorer III asked a Yooper what did they do in the summer.

We have had frost in AUGUST.
Indian Summer was my favorite time. Harvest season. - rbs62ExplorerMy grandpa had a hunting/ fishing lodge in the area years ago .I'm trying to find it.
