Adding additional water tank to TT

We have a 40 gal fresh water tank. Pleanty for the weekend, but we are planning some longer trips out west. Have already talked to some of you about solar...am planning that upgrade soon!

I have 2 major storage areas in my TT. Front is huge pass thru under the queen bed. Rear is under a double bed for the kids. In this rear area, I've measured and have found 10, 15, even 20 gallon fresh water RV tanks that will fit for "extra" water in the desert / boondocking trips.

Instead of plumbing to my current tank, was thinking of adding a second pump and a hose to fill the factory plumbed tank. Use it as a back up to fill my tank only.

Anyone done this? Any issues? I don't plan on driving with 15 or 20 gallons of water all the time...

  • Another option to consider is a portable water tank which would be the approach I would take. Put that in the bed of the truck and you can drag the water whenever you need more without changing the dynamics or the loading on the trailer.
  • Like other has said the easiest thing to do would be to pump out of the extra tanks and into your regular tank when needed then you could refill the portable extra tanks anywhere.
We use a 5 gallon portable tank to refill. However, dumping the gray has been of some concern. One campground we like has the rv sites at the top of the "mountain" with the dump station about 1 mile away down a steep hill. We have a portable dump tank but have worried about hauling it so far especially down such a steep hill. The solution we want to try is to put the 35 gallon dump tank in the back of the truck and use a 12v pump to pump the gray water through a garden hose up into the tank in the bed of the truck. That way we can just drive the truck to the dump station to unload instead of having to drive so slow and risk losing the tank if we pulled it behind.
Harbor Freight has one that looks to be just the ticket.
    12v pump from Harbor Freight
I'm sure it could serve the same purpose for transfering you fresh water
  • I removed the original 30 gal fresh water tank that was mounted on the floor under the couch (certified as the most uncomfortable couch in the universe).

I "hung" 3 40 gal tanks between the trailer frame rails below the floor. 2 of the tanks are tied together to form an 80 gal tank, one is by itself. I have 2 hand valves to select which tank is used, feeding the original pump.

Removing the original tank gave me a nice under couch storage area, and the 2 tank configuration allows me to take on the right amount of water for whatever stay we are planning. I never travel with the 80 full, just fill when going into a campground.

Don't forget, you need to store that water. I added 2 extra grey tanks (again valved to use whatever is needed) to hold the extra water.

    Regards,
    Doug

I bought a 34 gallon cooler that had a threaded drain port that I run through a 12volt pump to refill my freshwater tank. I have the cooler in the back of my truck so I can refill as often as needed.

    Excellent idea.
  • You know, I'm glad I posted this. I'm thinking a more portible idea is in back of the truck or use the water jug idea. Can still get a pump to move the water into the trailer. I have a 6 gal jug now, and have used it... but hate hoisting it up shoulder level (I'm not the tallest guy in the campground!) to fill the tank. Maybe another jug and a pump and we are good to go.

    Apprecite the experiences.

  • The only consideration is the additional weight and the balance of the TT. A center above axle location is prefered....166 lbs....20 gallons of water...Pumping from the extra tank into the main is a good plan, unless you could sister the tanks together but location probably prohibits that....
  • Camping for long periods in the Arizona desert, we frequently need to add additional water to our tank. Our current FW has the ability to pull water from an external tank. But in the past, we'd carry water jugs in the back of the PU. When we needed to add water, we would use a hose and a portable 12V pump that would allow us to pump water from the jug to the main water tank without having to lift the full jugs out of the truck. The nice thing about this set up was that once the jugs were empty, we could refill them anywhere there was water available without having to move the trailer.
