Changing carpet to laminate?

DW wants to take out the light coloured carpet and replace it with a light coloured laminate. She desn't like the light carpet because it gets dirty too easily. Her brother did it in his Terry Dakota fiver, told me it wasn't worth it.

Ours is a 2003 30RLS Carriage. Has any one ever done this?

I did pull one of the floor vents and found that the vinyl flooring stops about a foot from the edge of the slide. I think it would be easier and would look better if I just cut the carpet back to the edge of the existing laminate.

Has anyone ever done this? Anything I need to be aware of?
  • Cpaulsen,

That is the reason DW wants to put in the laminate. She figures it will be much easier to keep it clean.
  • I did that 2 years ago with grate results.I keep the carpet in the slid out area other than that I HAVE ONLY WOOD LAMINATE in the whole FW.
  • When I did mine....also leaving the carpet on the slides....I took a piece of laminate and lifted up the piece of carpet that overhangs the floor and drove a couple of small tacks into it to hold it down. Then ran the slides in and out to make sure everything cleared. Had no problems with clearance and ripped the carpet out and installed all the laminate. I used a small nailer for brads and attached the edge of the laminate under the carpet on the slides that way. What a huge difference for keeping the 5ver clean.
  • Fiver wheel.

I am thinking of replacing the carpet with laminate on the main floor area. I want to leave the carpet on the slide areas. I am concerned with how far under the slide the carpet is and how it is anchored under there.

As I said in the original post, BIL did his and had lots of issues. The largest of which was the spacing between the original carpet and the bottom of the slide. He did not want to catch the bottom of the slide on the top edge of the laminate and cause variety of damage. Either tear up the laminate he just put down or jam the slide by having the new laminate be too thick causing the slide to ride up over it and jam the slide mechanism somehow.

As far as Micheal said matching the finish should't be too hard. I have natural maple on my cupboards with a clear finish. Should be relatively easy to match.
  • ...just finished replacing carpeting with oak laminate around the bedroom area of our travel trailer; hardest part was trying to find an oak stain that closely matches the oak flooring and/or oak bed and cabinets color(came close, but not total match, but still looks good); when doing the 1/4 round trim around the edges, be sure and pre-drill the nail holes in trim pieces. Things went smoothly. I found it to be one of the easier 'Do It Yourself' jobs. I had the chop and table saws just outside the door to make it easier to the cut by cut of pieces. I started by staining all the corner, edge and trim pieces and let them dry while I measured and cut flooring; I found it helpful to also do a polyurethane finish on the trim pieces to match the shine of the flooring..
  • Normally the carpet in the slide has a finished lead edge. The laminate finishes under the slide and under the carpet and under a sliding piece of hard plastic. Is that the piece you're thinking of cutting?
The laminate in my MH comes to within 3" of the outside wall and if cut off would reveal the stiff plastic piece under the carpet.
