Anderson Hitch for gooseneck ball?

Any of ya'll using the Anderson hitch that attaches to your gooseneckball?are you glad you went to that hitch or now would you avoid like the flu.My ball is a Curt so BW wont work
I have been using a Curt rail adapter and a reese hitch and it worked fine on my 03 truck but the 2012 is a few inchs taller on the bed sides and at the top adjustment I just barely clear the bed with the pin box and if tilted any and making a sharp turn have just barely scraped the rail cover.I cant find a hitch that goes any higher than 18in except the Anderson which will go 19 1/2.

  • The Andersen Ultimate 5th wheel hitch, though it hooks to the ball in the bed of the truck, to secure it, is actually a 5th wheel hitch and is considered that by quite a few of the hitch installing experts....you don't need a safety chain for it, (unless it's a state thing), but you have 4 legs supporting the ball that you hook up to and it's 18-20" off the deck of the truck, not in the bed of the truck.

Quite a few of the guys on the cummins forum who have the new Rams with the GN/5er prep package have gone with the Reese Elite drop in ball, and the Andersen Ultimate 5th. wheel hitch to tow their 5er's with....Seems to be working well for quite a few of them on that forum..
  • Thanks everyone.Might just have to go yhat route.I only switched to a 5er hitch cause I couldnt see to hookup with the gooseneck adapter on 5er after getting new truck, they are just too tall to see the ball.Forgot I had never used the Reese on the 03.I believe the GM 07 1/2 up beds are 21 tall and the older beds were 19.
  • I have an Anderson hitch. Love the thing. I have had it for quite a while I love the fact that it is very easy to hitch up. I also love the fact that I can use the bed of the truck even while the 5er is attached. I did have it welded into place on the 5er other than that just used it as it came out of the box. I have had that hitch on two of my fifth wheels and have traveled on some of the roughest roads in the country and out of the country never had a problem.
  • At the risk of being too enthusiastic, I love it. I did however install it differently than instructed.

After speaking to one of the engineers at the Andersen factory, I drilled and bolted the coupler block to the 5th wheel plate.

If the set screws are removed 3/8 bolts fit perfectly. I used grade 8 fine thread bolts and torqued accordingly.

Not really necessary but I am one for over engineering!! The block is still indexed on the king pin so no real stress on the 3/8 bolts.

I also made and installed some threaded brass bosses under the bed to hold the base in the truck from turning.

Again the factory guy said not necessary but would not hurt anything.

To sum up, I find it to be the easiest hookup of any trailer I ever owned. I can see the ball in my rearview mirror and with the remote for the Ground Control System I can raise and lower the coupler as necessary.

Finally, I am able to remove the hitch easily by myself which I was not able to do with the B&W Companion even in two pieces.
The cost of the Andersen is about half of the Companion so there is that. The cost of the Rail version is even less!
