Blofgren has it
Early production (thru 2015) 6.7L engines had an not too uncommon issue that was really not the engine but rather then Bosch CP4.2 fuel pump.
This fuel pump was a problem in every engine it was put it, VW, Audi, etc -and- Ford.
The problem was bad enough that the "Feds" made Bosch give them a report on the fuel pump, it was not a bad enough problem to issue any recalls though.
The problem is Ford sometimes, not always, found reasons to void the warranty. The reports from my VW/Audi friends is that VW and Audi fixed every engine that this fuel pump wrecked.
The reports are the Bosch has "fixed" what ever the issue with the fuel pump was.
You are correct in that media releases have said that the problem has been supposedly fixed with the fuel pump. I have yet to find any meaningful information at all as to what exactly this means. That alone would be enough to keep me steered away from it. I truly think it`s not a matter of if but when it is going to grenade.
Interestingly, GM uses the same pump on the Duramax diesel but my understanding is that they have covered every failure under warranty.
I too would recommend looking up some of the Powerstroke help videos on the 6.7L; he goes over one in detail and discusses the complexity of them along with common failures he has seen. The fact that they have 2 completely separate cooling systems is just one small example of the complexity they have that the products from the competition do not have.
I find most of Ford`s advertising for the 6.7L is based upon class leading power and torque and silly hill climbing competitions. They do not talk much about long term reliability, something that still remains to be proven IMHO.
