Wintering on Vancouver Island B.C. Hydro is expensive here . Would I save any money ove a month , by turning my electric 12 gal hot water off in the evening and back on in the morning ? Or would it cost just as much to reheat in the morning ? Thanks everyone .

As quickly as our units reheat, you will probably save a little each cycle. It will not be enough to finance a new truck, but it might pay for some adult anti-freeze.

The water heater has a thermostat in it. It is efficiently turning itself off and on for you so you don't have to.The heater is not on all night the thermostat is turning it on and off.Turning it off in the evening and allowing the water too cool off will produce negligible savings.

Check your usage for a couple days leaving it on, then check a couple days turning it off. Then you'll know for sure. No one on here can tell you with any degree of accuracy since there are lots of variables. Maybe you have lots of mineral build-up in your tank, maybe your insulation is crushed in spots, maybe your heating element is going south, etc. Check it and find out for sure.

Depends on how many times it cycles during the evening.Water is heated to 130*F. Heating will turn back on when temp reaches 100*FElectric heating is roughly 6.2 gallons per hour but that is based on cold water replacing the hot water not just reheating of water 30*FSavings over a month would only be a small amount.One that shouldn't make a budget difference.How much is electric .......kw/h cost?We pay $0.15 per kw/h here in AZ

Worked with a guy that would drive 5 miles out of his way to get gasoline cause it was cheaper

Can't remember the number of times I stopped to to help him out cause he ran out of gas :S

Convenience is worth the few pennies each day.

Glad that you have more money than I. All things being equal I will save money when I can. If flipping a rocker switch twice a day saves me a few bucks over a month's time I'm all for it.

Shoot, I used to go to the Self-Service lane at the gas station to save a couple cents a gallon, when they first started Self-Service.

No I would not choose a gas station strictly to save gas.
Convenience,ease of entry exit are far bigger concerns than price.
Same with the water heater. I not going to think about it or touch it at all. Even if I may save a few cents the convenience factor still applies. Turn it on once. Turn it on when I arrive, turn it off when I leave.

Hi,

A ten gallon water heater will cycle about every four hours and run for about 15 minutes. That's 90 minutes of run time to nothing but keep the water in the tank hot.

You can save by turning on first thing in the morning. Do your showers, and the breakfast dishes. Then turn off. There may be enough hot water to finish out the supper dishes.

Yes. Back in the day "everyone" had a timer to control their electric water heater. Many still do. Much may have changed in the home heater systems but RV heaters are not included here. You can insulate the tank on the inside of the RV all you want, the out side is still exposed to the elements. The tube for the gas burner goes through the middle of the water tank and has no insulation. Loses lots of heat. Go out and feel it sometime. Since I never use the gas mode, I have insulated the outside of the water heater.
