Relocating

From NJ. Thinking of relocating in a year or two. Any ideas in the eastern tenn west sc west nc. Any suggestions would help.
  • If you really want some beautiful country, Ashville NC to Morganton NC is a wonderful part of the country to live. I lived near Morganton (a life time ago), and absolutely loved that area. The geographical area is call "The Piedmont", it's that area right before ascending into the Smokey Mountains. Be prepared to adjust to a "different" life style though. You'll have to learn to really SLOW down you're pace!
  • Asheville, NC is listed in the top 10 retirement communities because of the cost of living, availability of medical care, but also for the arts community and things to do in the area.

You might want to consider the "Tri-cities" area of NE Tennessee. About an hour north of Gatlinburg, Asheville. You are about 3 1/2 hrs north of Atlanta, hour from Knoxville.

The tri includes Kingsport, TN, Johnson City, TN and Bristol, TN/and VA. The cost of living is greatly decreased in these areas.
  • We just visited friends who moved from our neighborhood to western SC, near Salem. They bought one of the most fabulous houses I've ever seen in the "Cliffs" and there are a couple more for sale. One of them is 6000 sq ft with a paver parking lot, ground level and 2nd floor decks w/fire places! They're in beautiful foothills and they have a really nice lake right there. It's paradise! We'd go there in a flash but we'd be even farther from any family. Craig
  • I live "just outside" the Asheville NC city limits...beautiful country....easy access to I40 and I26 and mountains, mountains and more mountains....Also, "Business is booming" around here right now.....

We camp in the mountains of SC, takes about 2 hrs to get to Lake Keowee area close to Seneca and Clemson....takes about the same amount of time (while towing), to get into the Sevierville, Knoxville, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge areas also...Same with Cherokee and Maggie Valley...all in the mountains, great fishing and it is a great area to live in. Also within couple hours drive to Bristol Va (Bristol Speedway).....just a few places I could think of...

you also have "The Biltmore House" in Asheville along with lot's of shops that people love to spend time in as well as "The Farmers Market" just off I40 in Asheville....ALWAY'S something to do....

Much nicer, lower cost of living, and much better health care access in other areas of the country than asheville nc. I am a texan and have lived in eastern and western nc.
  • Our friends live 1/4 mile up the hill from one of the boat docks at Keowee. I don't think there's a bad place to live around there - it's all gorgeous! We rented a pontoon boat and ran around another lake near them, in a state park. Craig
  • My son lives in Boone, NC They are so high up in the mountains that they don't need A/C in the summer. The older I get the more I like weather like that.

The town is on the small side, but ASU is there and it is growing. My son likes it very much.

Boone is nice, actually about anywhere in Western NC is mountainous and just an awesome place to live...Highest mountain east of the Mississippi is Mt. Mitchell on the Blue Ridge Parkway just outside of Asheville.

App State is nice college, ( National Champs several times in their division...they've moved up since)...
  • Just a thought SC an NC are state income tax states. Tennessee isn't.
