School me on used TH pricing

Today was my first time looking and pricing used toy haulers after being in a truck camper. We are trying to keep it under $15k if possible for something decent.

One thing I have noticed is NADA guides are waaaaaay under what everyone in this area are asking for their rigs, especially dealers. A couple of examples are one dealer had an 04 22ft Gear Box for $13,900 in very good shape, and NADA says it tops out at just over $10k. Another is a private party with a pretty nice, fairly loaded 2002 Weekend Warrior for $8800, yet NADA says retail is $4495, a BIG difference.

Is there another closer-to-reality price guide service out there? I realize Memorial weekend is not the best time to look, but I just got the bug. We are going to finance, and I assume the bank uses NADA, in which case they will say no because of the price differences. Who is going to loan $10k, when the book says it's only worth $6k?
  • Supply & Demand.....&..... Area makes a big difference.........Always get the best deals in the Fall / off seasons....... highest price in the late spring & summer.....
  • IMO, pricing on Toy Haulers is very seasonal.
Especially in the biggest markets areas.

Take Phoenix for example, probably 1 of, if not the biggest market for TH.
The season there is late fall to late spring, desert/dune season.
At the end of August in Phx, TH sales are way down, nobody is going to the dunes at 117* in the sun. The people that really need to sell, seem to dump them for unbelievably low prices at this time of year.

Saw lots of nice slightly used almost new TH priced extremely low, in the middle of a hot Phx summer. Prices seemed to get better right to the beginning of the fall, then they start to rise again as sales pickup right before dune season starts. You can see many TH stay on CL for weeks, months, that time of year. Although the good ones will go fast once they are priced extremely low.

I got my WW 07 FSW 3200+4 for $17,000 about 2 years ago on Craigs list Phx. NADA had it listed for $33,000. The bill of sales was with all the paper work, in original blue folder in the TH over the sink. The price paid new was $56,000 new in 08.
It had 24 hours on the gen hour meter. The plastic covers were still on the mattresses. China bomb tires looked like new. The TH was hardly used at all... Other than a small cosmetic scratch or 2 on the outside of the fiberglass, and a little cut in kitchen floor vinyl, the TH was in like new condition. Thought I did good on the buy.

So imo, this is what I've found...
Buy at the right time of year in big seasonal markets for the win...
Or buy in the middle of TH/rv season for the most expensive price.

  • medicbaldwin it could be that what you have is more of a 2005 that they produced early and kept the 2004 year. See if the 2005 section lists what you have. If know the model number that helps, something like M-27FBS.
  • Jumping in on this TH pricing, I'm quite aware that used RV's can be foung on NADA, but what's a guy to do when your TH isn't listed on NADA.com??

My trailer is an '04 Komfort K2 Trailblazer, 30' triple axle. Looking on NADA, the biggest listed is a 27' double axle, however my trailer clearly has 3 axles.

It's a bit rough to get an idea of what to list my trailer for, when there's nothing to go off of?
  • Have noticed some car dealers price used really high to try and motivate you to buy a new unit instead of used..... and if you buy a used they make killer margins.
  • I'm in the Sacramento area and had the same problem finding a trailer.
I found most of the high asking prices was due to bank pay off, not market value.
I searched all of Ca and ended up buying from a private party In San Louis Obispo.
Be patient and you will find what you want.
  • Yea, I think location and the time of year has a lot to do with it. I am in rural Nevada with the closest "city" being Reno and there just isn't much available there right now. But even 180 miles away in Sacramento, all prices seem to be quite a bit over NADA. In fact I cannot find one even close to NADA, at least in my price range.

One problem I have, is I am fairly limited to what I can buy. I have a Kawasaki Teryx with a near 79" high roof. Most don't have that kind of clearance without removing the rear bed(s). It will easily fit in the 22ft Gear Box, but the dealer is firm on over $15k out the door, and it only books for a bit over $10k. He keeps telling me the $13,900 is the SALE PRICE and they can't go any lower. Maybe I will just wait a couple of weeks and see if they still have it. I might have a bit more leverage then. Hopefully it's ugly interior will steer potential buyers away...

  • All prices are negotiable. If the dealer is asking 13k and NADA says 10k I'd start my offer at 9k and be willing to go to 10k before I walked. Part of why you see so many high prices by individuals isn't the real value it's how much they still owe to the bank on their RV. Never hurts to print out the NADA info and ask why they think their RV is so much better then NADA pricing. You could have missed something or they may include a couple bars of gold ;)
  • We just spent the last several months trailer shopping. Almost everything we looked at was at or under NADA. If I remember the NADA site has three prices. Suggested retail, average and low. Just wondering which one you are using. We used the average price for our search. I would say location has a lot to do with it but a lot of the trailers we looked at on line were on the west coast.
  • Not really. Look on craigslist , rvtrader for price comparisons. People can ask anything they want for something they own. It does not mean that someone is willing to pay that for it.
