sound system upgrade

I started a thread a few weeks ago about upgrading my head unit to include DVD. Scrapped that idea and went to a Sony unit with aux. input and new separate DVD player. Was also looking for RF remote so it can be adjusted from afar (campfire) but had no luck on anything decent. However this unit is Bluetooth compatible and wouldn't you know it, "there's an app for that". When I read the owner's manual they described the app so I downloaded it to my iphone and VOILA! I now have a fully functioning remote that works 50' from the head unit! Plus the unit has multiple outputs for "front/rear" so I can use the fader to adjust inside/outside volume bias. And it can stream music from my phone as well as connect via USB. All this for $130.00 on Amazon.

Here's the unit I bought clicky

Now I'm ugrading the POS speaker they put in that they call a "subwoofer" to a 10" Blaupunkt that I had laying around, not too tough except trying to build a box behind it all through a 9" hole under the refer! Final report when I finish the sub install tonight.

The real kicker is that now I can connect the TV output to the stereo for better sound inside and outside when we're watching SX in the desert via the projector!
  • Looks like a great upgrade.

So the app works from 50' away? Is it using Bluetooth? That's pretty good range for a BT signal. I thought the BT standard was a max of 30'. My crappy BT earbuds won't work when I put my iPhone in my pocket three feet from my head, but your app works fifty feet away? Life is so unfair.
  • Got it all tuned up last night, Serius XM registered and working, sounds great, can't wait to try it all out camping in the desert. I think next upgrade will be an external sub in a box with amp.........but that's a ways off.

Cool - let's see pics when you get it set up! Also, what do you project onto and how do you have your projector set up? I have a small LCD projector that would work fine when it's dark, and I've considered getting a screen to hang from under the awning somehow. Getting sound from the projector or video source back to the RV speakers is another hurdle you might have solved.

I have an Epson LCD projector, only works at night. Have a regular 8' screen and hang it from the awning with the rubber clips/hooks that slide into the awning slot, works PERFECT. The audio comes directly off the satellite audio outputs to the stereo, all within the trailer, only thing that goes to the projector is a 50' HDMI cable plus power.

Check the output wattage on the radio, you may need an amp to drive the bigger sub.

Already have a 100 watt, should be enough, I'm not a booming bass guy.

I don't have a sub and still decided to use a 300 watt amp for the exterior speakers. I started with a 100 watt amp but still got too much distortion.

  • I'm impressed.

Now, lets just hope the Noise Police, don't contribute.
