I was in Dallas last month for business and took a trip out to see Joe . I too have a F250 (2014 with 6.7 PSD Crew Cab) and am upgrading my 5er to one that has a dry weight of 16500lbs. Now I knew my new truck can pull it and I even had air bags installed, I just didn't want to risk it. So I went to see Joe and he gave me a test drive in his 2011? F350 SRW with a 40ft gooseneck that weighed 11k attached. I couldn't believe the handling of this thing, we went into a parking lot and I was just amazed at the maneuverability, blown away. We then went onto the freeway and he got up to 60mph and did a lane change that I almost sh*t my pants. Solid, solid, solid. I am sold. I am placing my order this week for both the safety hitch as well as a new Road Warrior 420 that I can tow with piece of mind. People who aren't forward thinking and are afraid of change are the naysayers I feel. Joe mentioned to me that he had the safety hitch tested to see what ratings he could achieve, they company called him and the guy said to him that in the 30 years he's been testing equipment he never ran into one that his equipment couldn't break, until the safety hitch. He said he stopped after 45,000lbs. So Joe had it certified at 30,000 lbs. I am going to trust the NASA engineer on this one. Change is good, how these things aren't being sold at RV dealers is beyond me. This thing is a home run. Good luck.

So to stay within the overall 10,000 GVWR, I'm limited to around 2200 pin weight, not the 3200 allowed by just using the rear axle rating.

In my state(Washington) one would just license for more than the manufactureers GVWR of 10,000 lbs and be good to go if under the axle/tire ratings. My 8800 GVWR truck is licensed to 12K. Tare wieght x 1.5 and then round up to the next even K is what they go by here.

You guys here would sideline every hotshot pickup in the country with your "weight Police" thinking.

As Jimnlin says, weight posts on RV forums become jokes on hotshot forums.

JIMNLIN and Chris are right. Most don't use GVWR, but go by RAWR...As suggested, if OP were to load his truck up with whatever he loads up with to go camping and get the truck weighed, see what drive axle weighs and subtract that from what your RAWR is...(if you don't have a 5er hitch in the bed of your truck, add about 200# for that.

One thing I would do is look more at the 5er's GVW, not it's empty or dry weight...it's far more realistic to add more weight...worse case, go with fully loaded GVW of 16,500#, you may never load to that, but one never knows until they do the weights at a CAT scale. As stated earlier, pin weight could fall between 2800 to 3300#, (but if you load your toy's in the back of the hauler as is set up to do, I believe it does take some pin weight off the truck...

I towed a 14,500 5er that weighed around 13,500, if not mistaken and it had a 2800# pin weight...Towed it with an 03' Chevy D/A 2500 in the mountains and it did ok...and I had 800# less GVWR than your truck has....Bottom line, do the weights as suggested and go from there:)

Thank you, should have posted there, question started out on what you just addressed...axle and real weight rating and safety vs the payload sticker which is just the 10,000 gvwr minus the weight of the truck. Looking to make sure i can stretch the payload a bit but still stay within capability. Thank you

You need to look at the tow specs to see how much 5th wheel trailer you can tow.

Your F250 has 6100 RAWR which leaves the truck with around 3100-3300 lb of payload. This is how folks with 3/4 ton trucks are pulling some big trailers. Doing so is legally how weight is carried and more importantly its safe.

The only way you will ever know how much weight your particular truck can carry is load the truck ready for a trip and weigh the front and rear axles separately. Work from those actual numbers instead of guessing.

Also todays trailer on average have some big CCC which many owners will never reach or even reach the trailers full GVWR numbers.

Awesome suggestion, thank you. I did find some of their products last night looking, and the nearest dealer as well, but he didn't have much in stock. They have some very low hitch weight, even on the inferno models. I will look more at those, but generally did find good feedback on kz, just haven't heard of them before. Thank you

some years ago we had a 35' KZ toyhauler we towed with a chev 2500HD diesel and were within all weight specs. KZ used to have a pretty good rep for quality too. Check them out here
