Trailer Wiring - Added Side Turn Signals

Thanks for all of the replies. I have ordered a converter as suggested, and that should do the trick.

the turn filament is the same as brakes in a standard 1057 lamp so When you signal that filament flashes and if you have your foot on the brake the other stays steady. Thats the way it is supposed to work. I added side markers/turn years ago and grabbed the wiring just after it entered the basement after it came thru the kingpin. so easy. I hot glued the wiring along the sides of the basement walls.

I have them on my current trailer. Tapped the tail-light housings brake/turn wires with a suitcase connector and ran the wire along the top of the frame to the slide wiring elbow (both sides are mounted on fender skirts attached to slides) and to a point between the wheels.

It doesn't bother me a bit that they also come on with the brakes. As far as I am concerned there can't be too many lights anywhere on the rig. Front, back, sides! Lights or reflective safety tape; most people seem to be able to ignore them. I warn them twice and then if I really need to get over, I act on the "I'm bigger than they are" theory. (Probably also older and meaner, but that is another topic.)

I replaced the forward side markers on my Montana with trucker mid-turn lights (both marker and turn lights). To prevent the mid turn lights from coming on with the brakes, I used a Drawtite 118158 which looks the same as CAddy's Curt version. I just "T" tapped the turn lights on the harness up by the batteries and fed the midturn lights off this. No change to the taillight wiring. This adapter senses when both left and right sides come on with the brake lights, and cancels output to the midturn lights.

Those things really worked for moving traffic! As soon as I get brave enough to drill into the paint on this new rig, I'll install then on this Redwood too, but probably LED.

You're on the wrong for forum for that LOL! One guy asked about fabricating a rack to carry firewood on the back of his trailer and got 3 pages of replies regarding laws against the transportation of firewood.....

Back on topic, have you found that the side directionals help you in traffic or do other motorists ignore them?

I picked up the same box as CEddy. Plans are for side turn and CHMSL mounted above the spare tire.

You need one of these.

I installed my side signals using this box, and it works fine- the side signals only light up when using that side's turn signal, and will not light up with the brakes. I mounted it under the front of my trailer near the pigtail junction box.

I just left the red brake light output wire taped up. Although, if you're so inclined, I suppose you could tap the red wire and run a center high-mount stop light on your trailer, too!

Mine already has the lights on both sides of the 5er...They come on with running lights and when giving a signal, whichever direction I'm turning, the lights blink with signal lights on truck..pretty cool:)
