Dashboard camera insurance discount

After a few emails and letters, I was finally informed of this...

https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2015/S6785

Wouldn't it be nice if we saw MORE of this? With any potential legislation now being considered for immediate law enforcement searches of cellphone activity for any operator involved in an accident, the cry of "personal rights violation" runs afoul any chance of seeing it as law any time soon.

So, why can't the innocent have the tool to protect themselves and their property and voluntarily PROVE their lack of distracted driving?

Until there's a way to completely STOP distracted driving, I want a way to protect myself AND.... NOT have to keep paying higher insurance premiums for all those who will continue to cause accidents and incidents.

It would be a GREAT benefit if Good Sam took up the banner and helped in the fight to protect all RV owners.

  • After driving to THOUSANDS of EMS calls after a dash-cam system was installed in our entire fleet, you'd be surprised how much more cautious you drive when you know your job could be on the line.
I would rather HAVE a camera and face MY responsibilities rather than NOT have one and get blamed for something I DIDN'T do.
AND, I'm pretty sure that not only will my insurance carrier like the idea, but the local LEO's might appreciate it too. *(The system I was familiar with allowed the operator to activate the system MANUALLY to record OTHER drivers and incidents.
  • It's well worth getting one these days, especially with the protection they offer you. We chose the NOVATEK G1W based on reviews, it was cheap enough and does the job really well!
  • For the cost now of a cheap dash cam, Now less than $50.00 I own two, one in each vehicle. You never know when it just might save you a lot of trouble being able to prove by video that the other guy did something that was the cause rather than just hearing him/her say it wasn't me it was the other guy!!
  • Yes, the knee-jerk reaction is "good for me!" But, think it through to it's ultimate implications.

    hint: Think "unintended consequences"
  • Dash cams can prove innocence but they can also prove guilt if you are at fault.
Would it not work both ways?
  • Thanks. We've only been RV'ing for one year, but after seeing how other drivers seem to believe that we're really just big cars, with the ability to move, maneuver, avoid, and stop as easily as them, there really isn't any means or avenue for us to better protect ourselves.
Having had a career in EMS as a Paramedic for 24 years, I have seen, first hand, how other drivers make some pretty bad decisions. I have also witnessed how differently the "system" of responsibility and fault changes with the presence of recordable drive-cam systems. The company I last worked for had them installed in all vehicles and it greatly assisted in quite a few litigations, proving innocence when no other proof existed. The insurance company LOVED that.
  • Hello PhilandJoyce,

Thank you for your suggestion and your post. We'll pass this on for you.

    Thanks,
    David
