110 power

Two questions for the experts on this forum. I have a 2004 Jayco Granite Ridge 2900 with an inverter, should the 110 circuits work while I am driving? Also, what does the battery disconnect switch do, and when should it be used? Thanks in advance for the advice.
  • We have a 03 Granite Ridge and the inverter powers only the plug for the TV. It is also set up NOT to work while the coach is in motion. Other Jayco owners have talked about disconnecting I believe the blue wire and the outlet with work when traveling.
  • The inverter will power the same outlets whether in motion or camped. Although some have a cut off to prevent the driver from watching tv while driving.

Battery switch is to prevent discharge while in storage and not plugged in.
  • We've tried to charge the g-kids electronic devices while driving. I'll have to check the size of the inverter and locate the outlet that powers the TV. It does not work while driving so it may be locked out as a couple of you have suggested. Thanks for all the feed-back. For those of you from the Pacific Northwest, just came back from Grayland State Park, what a nice campground.
  • As others have said, it is probably a small inverter connected only to the TV outlet. Another catch is that the TV outlet may be locked out when driving, IF the TV is visible to the driver.

  • Do you know how big the inverter is? Our Jayco Greyhawk came with a small 400 Watt inverter that is connected to only one outlet. It's the outlet over the cab that powers the TV outlet. A larger inverter will most likel be wired to more outlets.

Is there something to lead you to believe they wouldn't?
  • Hi jsmart,
On our Jayco Grayhawk the 400w inverter powered just the plug next to the TV and DVD player. We could plug a computer in to charge the batteries or other small stuff. It was a modified sinewave (square wave) inverter and we found that some inexpensive items did not work well on this type of power. However, the TV and DVD worked great.
  • Hi,

The inverter may be wired to power one or two outlets--or the entire RV.

Depending on where the TV is located there may be a relay that prevents power being used while driving.

Battery disconnect is used mainly for storage.
  • What does your inverter power when you are stopped with the engine and generator off and shore power disconnected? Those things should operate while you are driving. Most inverters are connected directly to the battery(ies).

If you are talking about a power management system, which includes power input and distribution and battery charger it may be different but, if you have either a MSW or PSW inverter that is used to convert DV voltage to AC voltage the above should be true.
  • Depends on the size of the inverter, but it should power most small things. If you need more: like AC and microwave - just run the generator. The disconnect switch is usually used when you place in storage to prevent battery drain. I have it for my coach battery in my older Allegro. Keep my current C plugged in 24/7.
