1992 Winnebago Adventurer

My husband and I have been looking for a Class A diesel motor home for a while. I have found a 1992 Winnebago Adventurer with an Air cooled Cummins diesel engine. Does anybody have any comments on these? I have read Mileage is approx 7 mpg, which is the same as a gas engine. Any roof problems or common mechanical problems? Can it tow a 4000lb Chevy Volt?
  • Hi. I have the same rig with different set of stickers on it. The Itasca Suncruiser and the Winnie Adventurer are the same vehicle made by Winnebago. It get 10-11 mpg depending if I am towing or not. The Cummins 5.9L engine and the Allison 542 transmission are bullet-proof reliable, but it is not fast. I'll let others comment about the general items, but one item of concern specific to this coach is the 100 gallon water tank. They tend to fall out onto the road. It happened to me and one other owner in Texas. I managed to contact yet another owner whose tank was ready to drop. Check the 8 support brackets for cracks. I managed to use two 10000lb loading straps to secure the tank because I didn't want to weld so close to nearby propane tank. That happened 8 years ago and it's been good since. Similarly, there is recall on the fuel tank that was probably fixed long ago. Yes they've been falling out too, but mine is fine. While I'm at it, the spare tire has a similar recall for the same crap. So check the two tanks and the spare. The people driving behind you will really appreciate it. We've had our 21 year old Motorhome for 11 years and have received good use out of it. I hope that helps.

An air cooled Cummings engine and are ya sure about that?
  • Thanks. That was very helpful. It was TURBO Charged diesel engine. I am not mechanical and have emeory problems. lol.
  • I knew a guy that had an air cooled diesel in his Semi (I believe it was called a Deuche Diesel pardon the mis spelling the diesel engine was made in Germany). That air cooled diesel ran great for him and it was the only one I seen in a big truck. His name was Willie so we abruptly named him "Air Cooled Willie" That's the only big diesel air cooled motor that I've heard of!
  • Regarding towing the Volt: I would make sure that it can be flat-towed (all 4 wheels on the ground). I would do a seach. There is an annual towing guide that specifically states what makes/models/transmission-types can be towed that way. You'd need a tow dolly otherwise.

About the 1992 Adventurer: It has a GVW of 18,000 pounds and a CGVW of 24,000 pounds, which means that the chassis has a 6,000-lb towing capacity. The bad news: The actual towing receiver is only rated for 3,500 pounds. That Volt will be slightly over the limit.
