- FIRE_UPExplorerDesert Steven,
Well Sir, you're in for some work. The fan is held onto the rotor with I think, 4 long bolts. It's been a while. Take a look at the picture below.
You'll see the fan is between the rotor/stator and, the front cowling. The front cowling and all related hardware/equipment has to be loosened enough to tilt somewhat forward (away from the fan, in order for the fan to "slip" out between the stator and the cowling. I had to do some serious work on my gen as you can see by the fact that it was that far torn down at the time this picture was taken. But, at the minute, I can't remember just what size the bolt heads are that hold that fan to the rotor are. The fan has a seal it rides against that's on the cowling.
Sorry I can't be of more help. I just loosened things up as much as I dared and tweaked that entire front cowling enough to not only remove the fan but also the damaged rotor I had and some other equipment. Hope this helps some.
Scott - Desert_StephenExplorerOk,,,, oh man! I see how much work I have to do. Thank you for the photo!! I guess I'm not that far away from having it disassembled some more. I hope. ;-)
Looks like you had some serious issues, to take it apart that far. Or like myself, you had one part that you had to replace that made you take it apart. Hope everything worked out ok for you.
Thanks again! - TwomedExplorerOnan Help
Register..log in, the Shop Manual (Onan calls it service manual) is available for download, or someone will email it to you, good group. Thought I had it, but no joy. You are on the right track. The fan has one slightly offset hole, only fits one way so finger tight all bolts first when re assembling.
Looks real familiar...a place most folks never visit. :)
Good luck... and of course replace belt and other stuff you can only access with the cover removed. - smlrangerExplorerYes, while you are in there that far, may as well replace water pump belt, thermostat, temp sensor and hoses. I even sent my radiator to a radiator shop for cleaning, leak check.
- Desert_StephenExplorerThank you everyone. For your help and your suggestions.
I pulled it apart a little more, and was able to get the new fan in.
Your suggestions of a new thermostat and belt etc are under consideration now as I type this. A small amount of money considering the amount of time it took to get it out.
Something I failed to mention this RV is new to us, and we are ironing out the bugs. This generator only has 525-550 hrs on it. the hoses & belt look excellent. If it were yours, with the amount of hrs on it, would you invest in replacing the belt, hoses, temp sensor, and thermostat? I'm not really trying to save money here, I'm just looking at the small amount of hours.
Thanks again for all your help,
Stephen - FIRE_UPExplorerStehphen,
While replacing those items suggested by Jeff might be a tad bit waste of money, it also might just prolong dependability and reliability of it too. To get it that far apart took you a bit of time. Do you want to go through all that again in what could be a month, two months, six months, two years, who knows?
Your comments on mine were right. I did have more than one issue when I was into mine. The infamous temp sensor was giving me the code of 33. The Gen had developed a hard starting situation prior to the code 33. It also had blown one of the magnets off and disintegrated it all over the inside of that gen. So, because I cracked the lower thermostat housing by putting so much torque on it to try and get that temp sensor out, I had to replace that, the sensor, the head gasket of the engine because the head had to be removed in order to get that lower thermostat housing off, and the two thermostat housing gaskets.
But, like yours, my belt and thermostat looked in flawless condition, and I tested that thermostat several times and, each time it opened up at very close to the prescribed temp setting. The belt was test "bent" in all kinds of dimensions and directions and showed no signs wear and tear at all. I made the choice to button everything up with both of them. Your choice.
Scott - TwomedExplorerYou don't mention the model year of your rig nut...if over five years old I would at least replace the belt, regardless of low hours. Just me, but that's too many 10mm bolts to do a second time. :) :)
- Desert_StephenExplorerSorry, it's a 2000 Bounder. We bought it in April, poor neglected beast. We love it. It's very comfortable.
I ordered the belt, will pick it up tomorrow.
Thanks for all y'all's help!
