Battery charger - connect negative to chassis

People have been charging batterie's for yr's by hooking the charger to positive and negative post's since they made batterie's, at least I have with no problem's, too many people worried about causing a spark, Just my thought's.

Connect charger leads first then plug in. No problem

The reason for connecting the negative lead on a frame component etc is in case of a spark it is not near the battery which can cause an explosion.

While that might be true, the odds of having enough hydrogen gas accumulated around the battery to create more than a little POOF are somewhat less than being struck by lightening when the sky is clear.

YES, it is perfectly fine to connect directly to the posts.
Plugging in the charger last is a good idea.
One of my chargers won't work right if you don't do it that way.
Amazingly enough, it says that right in the instructions.

I have seen a few lids pop and was not a big deal. The bad ones are always old stories and extreme conditions. Eye protection is always good. I have an odd habit to blow some air across the top as I connect so as to have a minimum hydrogen in the immediate area.

Electrically to the frame or post should be the same.

The danger is when fast charging. or jump starting. you can "Gas" the battery (The battery gives off something called Brown's gas. 2 parts Oxygen one part hydrogen.. Yup. add a spark and you have a bad scene. very bad).

SO when you BREAK the connection As Marvin desires one can get an Earth Shattering KA-BOOM (Well at least from your point of view)

You can make that last connection to any UNPAINTED part of the engine OR Frame. The engine block is electrically bonded to the frame..

Just for clarification, I am only talking about putting a trickle charger on to slow charge and maintain the battery. I do leave the charger unplugged until I have the cables attached. And I unplug the charger before I remove the cables. And the problem is that the opening to the engine is high and small, making it difficult to see/reach anything.
