- azkenExplorerHere's one way to lock down either a 2000 or 3000 Honda generator: http://lowprolockdown.com/shop/category/honda-eu2000/. Also Google about how/where to mount the generator.
- Cheryl_BExplorerThanks, everyone for your input. I won't be mounting it inside the compartment. I'll just keep moving it in and out for now. But I do need some ideas on how to secure it so it doesn't walk away so how do you keep it out in the air for running but safe from theft?
- JaxDadExplorer IIIA friend has a situation like this. He mounted heavy duty full extension drawer slides in that generator bay and a piece of 3/4" exterior grade plywood as a 'drawer'.
His generator, a 2k Honda, is bolted to the plywood and a bracket to hold an outboard motor fuel take that feeds it through a remote kit. To use the generator he just opens the door and pulls it out. - NaioExplorer III see used built in ones on craigslist all the time. Have you considered getting one of them?
- Hank85713Explorer1st I think you would want one with remote start capability such as one of the champion ones. 2d you would need to fabricate a mount for it on the rear of the coach. I mounted a 3K champion on the rear of my TT, never used it so far, but was fairly simple. As to exhaust you can rig a pipe to carry it away from the rv. Might use a flex pipe or something similar, remember that is all the built ins have and they usually exit either behind the driver door or just under the genset itself. fuel could be used as in a built in, just again have to fab a line and a small pump with a valve to keep from over filling. I did mine after seeing a fellow in mississippi going down the road with his on and then pulling into a rest stop and he had the ac going so the unit would be cool when he stopped. he ran and I plan to run the power cord back to the set and plug it in. But even an onboard gas tank with the gen set should last 8-10 hrs unless loaded hard. There are some 7Ks with remote start at cosco and some at CW I think. I got mine direct from champion when they offered a special on the remote start ones.
- NEOKExplorerIn addition to cooling and fuel delivery you would need a method to handle the exhaust fumes, otherwise you might risk getting carbon monoxide into your RV.
- Cheryl_BExplorerThanks, Matt. I was just curious. I am also concerned with theft of said "portable generator." How do I anchor it to the RV in such a way that I can feel it will still be there when I turn my back?
- Matt_ColieExplorer IICheryl,
There are some big differences between units that are built to be installed and those that are not.
Fuel delivery is just one. If it has a gravity tank, it is a big issue to try to feed it with any kind of a pump.
Another is cooling. Most portables are designed to be sitting on open air and that will not be what you have.
If you made a way to pull it out into the open, you could be well on your way. I have several friends that installed portable generators, and let me tell you about the effort.
Matt
