Cat powered Newmar Kountry Star

Hi All,

I am looking at a 2003 Newmar Kountry Star. It is the 3701 model and has a Caterpillar engine. I am not familiar with the Cat motor. Is there any issues or concerns with them. The mileage is about 36,500

I have had a coupe of pick ups with Cummins and had great luck.

The rig is in very good shape for the year.

Thanks for the help.

  • 140,000 on our 3126B in the Sahara. Doesn't use a drop of oil between yearly changes. Make sure the valve lash service was performed at about 30,000. Due next at 130,000. I don't know if the C7 has a greasable fan hub bearing, but if it does, make sure it's been done regularly.

The best thing about a CAT is the sound.
  • We had a 2003 Kountry Star with the Cat motor. Ours was an early '03 so it was the 3126, not the C7. It is my understanding they are basically the exact same engine except the 3126 doesn't have any emission stuff.

Overall a great package, I would highly recommend it.

The one thing that was recommended to us when we bought it, and good advice for any turbo vehicle, is make sure you let the turbo cool a few minutes before you shut it down. Also, make sure you give the cooling fan a shot of grease as scheduled - it's easy to get at through the closet.

Other than that, it's a fuel and go engine. Enjoy.
  • Although I only have about 44k miles we have had no issues with the CAT C7 in our 05 Travel Supreme. Provided the maintenance has been performed (esp. oil changes), both CAT and Cummins are fine.

  • The CAT is every bit as good as the Cummins of the era but they decided they didn't want to have to deal with the increasing emissions requirements for OTR trucks so they dropped out of that market.
  • Nothing is perfect. Friend had a cat that used 3 gallons of oil going to AZ front Michigan and same going back. Next MH was a Cummins . Just spent $20,500 for engine repairs. Coolant drained out next morning. New radiator was the fix. $4000.00 cost to get home from Florida. For sale now. Health issues. Chevman
  • Had a Cat diesel in a 2001 Winnebago motor home. Never had one problem with it in 5 plus years and 50000 miles. I would not hesitate buying another. If everything else was good that would not slow me down.
