changing overhead entertainment center to a cab over bed

Hi folks, we recently traded our tag along for a new class c motorhome. If we buy stock, what the dealer has on his lot as opposed to ordering (which will take several weeks, they are saying it is an easy fix to take out the overhead entertainment and put in a queen sleepover bed. They will remount the TV to a swing arm and change all the wiring for the TV. Thier tech man says it is an easy job, they will just order the bed parts from the factory.

Is this wise to do and do you think it will turn out alright or are we asking for problems down the road.

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer.
  • We got such a sweet deal on our new 2250 Sunseeker even though it had the overhead entertainment center rather than the bunk. It's not a difficult job depending on your experience and abilities, but it all depends on a variety of factors. On our Sunseeker, the cabling was run through the ceiling to the coach radio/amplifier, so I ended up cutting & leaving short runs of cables as they were glued into the passages.

Here's a photo essay of the project so far:

This model Sunseeker has 3 overhead options:

  • back in the day (2003ish), the cabover bed of born free MHs could be substituted by an optioal entertainment center
  • When we bought our last class c, we wanted a unit with a cabover bed, but found a great unit with a front entertainment system. My husband is handy and we thought we could replace the entertainment system with a bed. BUT, just to be on the safe side, we called the factory and asked for their opinion. The factory told us to NOT do this; that cabovers were given different structural support than entertainment systems.

Now, perhaps the rv that you are looking at is made differently, but I would check with the company.
  • I know that Forest River has that option with the Sunseekers, where one can get three configurations with the full cabover: Full bed, entertainment center with lots of storage, or a TV in center, and two twin bunks on either side. I personally just like the full bed, because it is the most versatile for what I do, and is ideal for stashing stuff that takes volume, but doesn't have much weight, like heavy blankets, sleeping bags, tents, and other stuff.
  • In that case if you are comfortable with the work and they wont require more than a down payment until the unit is finished and ready for your inspection the only thing left is to find out if the model you are looking at has any price difference between it and the model they are going to change it into. It sounds like the built in center and storage might raise the price of the unit and there is no sense in spending more to get less.
All that said, from my dealings with trying to get parts from the factory and having the wrong ones sent and then reordered, I would not want to pay for an RV and then wait. I waited 6 weeks just for replacement plastic wheel well protectors under warranty.
  • Thanks Samven, Its a chateau 31W......I did talk with the tech guy, and the space is the same as if there were already a queen cabover bunk. The entertainment centers is like a box just fitted into that space with 2 large storage cabinets on either side of the centered TV. He said he would just slide the cabinet box out, reset the TV and the cushions that make up a queen bed will fit. I am just hoping they don't tear the padded ceiling when taking out the box. Wonder if anyone else ever had this done to a class C?
  • I dont know what RV you are looking at but all the ones I have seen that have the overhead entertainment center also have a short cap. If you put the entertainment center in the front of most Class C bunks you would not be able to see or reach them. If this is a B+ then there wont be enough room for much more than a single bed and I dont know how well finished an area is thats not meant to be seen. You might want to check and see if that exact model is offered with a queen overhead bed.
A dealer will tell you anything to get you to sign and then the problems and delays are yours.
