class c 26ft no toad

After full timing for 5 yrs in a diesel pusher with a toad, we have down sized to a 26 ft class c.
Right now we plan to use the unit for short trips here in Florida and the occasional day trip to the beaches.
For those of you who travel WITHOUT a toad what are your experiences with sightseeing, parking, etc?
Our present vehicles would require a tow dolly. Not sure we want to go that direction.
Would love to hear experiences from those of you who are "toadless"

thanks

  • I have a 26.5 RV and travel between Washington DC and FL quite a bit. In some parts of FL it can be a little difficult finding parking at local beaches in the Melbourne area because the area has built up so much. Not much in the way of open beach along A1A that I remember from the 80"s. In general through I have had no problem and just go further north or south (I have family in Melbourne). I noticed the parking lots often have the concrete dividers that make it difficult for you to take only two spots. But further away from the stores there is more open spots. The parking spaces them selves are nice and wide so for example in the DC area I need four spots and in FL I need only two. Some times I rent a car if I am going to spend a lot of time running around in the city (town?) visiting. But there is plenty of places visit where a 26' would not be a problem. Much has to do with what you want to see.

    It works out great for "short" trips. But trips longer than 3 weeks or rain longer than a couple of days, we have found (for us) not so good, due to the smaller size. We downsized from large 5th wheel to smaller class C. Totally love the freedom of driving and parking, fits into most anything etc. But also miss the room of larger RV.

    Wife solved that problem by picking up a 30 foot TT late last year for longer time trips. Seems to be good choice for us and best of both worlds. I have no idea how a couple can live in a camper or short RV for a longer periods of time. My hats off to them. We go stir crazy quicker than others maybe.

    Overall, short trips we love the shorter RV's.
  • when point of interest are in places like the center of st. augustine, asheville, gatlinburg, new orleans, etc. you will be looking at appreciable walks from where you park.
  • We have a 27 foot Class C. We have crossed the country twice without a toad, and have not missed it. We have parked at the pier area of Santa Monica, in small towns like Jackson WY and Fort Collins CO, many of the western national parks, and some out of the way boondocking. One suggestion is if you make reservations at a restaurant/concert, ask them where to park the RV. For example, we parked at a grocery store a couple blocks away from the restaurant, that was recommended. So, as noted by an earlier poster, you just adapt to your circumstances. We also use public transportation if available. Lastly, one time we rented a car while in Florida for a couple of days.
  • We have a 31' class C and, because of towing a boat, do not use a toad. Two additional thoughts to what has already been mentioned.

    One, we have changed how we setup camp. We have minimized effort needed to "break camp" and run somewhere in MH. We don't hang awning lights, flags, etc. If out, we will leave chairs, grill, cooler, etc. at camp site. I also use quick disconnect on water and cable TV (if available). For sewer hookup, we have on of the hoses with caps on each end so I can disconnect from MH and cap off hose while out. Inside MH, we try to keep loose stuff to a minimum. Wife has setup baskets with non-slip feet for keeping loose items in place.

    The other thing is when camping without sewer hookups, it is really convenient to stop by dump station on way somewhere and dump gray water. We still stay aware of water usage but not near as much when we had 5'er and used a portable blue tote.
  • x 2 Snowdance' comments.
    We've learned to scout for a specific type of parking space/area's on google and as you go.Once had to pay premium $50.00 parking in Key West, tho we did not take much time to look for parking.
    We have Thor Siesta 25'9 --- love the flexibility.
  • We run toadless. Never have any problems finding places to park but do have to walk a few blocks from time to time. We do rent a car when needed or call a taxi if we need to be in a downtown area of a big city. We use our rig for shopping, going to the beach, day tours and other things far more than just camping. However we are travelers so always on the go.
