- gatorcqExplorerWhy not call the manufacture of the engine for there recommendations?
That would be the first place / person I would ask. They may know something we do not. - buta4ExplorerLet's see now .....
1 CUP Clorox Bleach that's 95% water?
90 GALLONS of fuel?
Water separator filter system?
Perhaps 1/2 teaspoon of harmful chemical?
My SWAG comes to about one part chemical to a gazillion parts of diesel. - wildmanbakerExplorerHR, after reading the 5 pages, I believe you have fixed the problem. I remembered that I had filled a gallon paint thinner can, half full of bleach about 8 months ago. I went to the garage and checked the can. There was no smell of bleach. I poured it into our sewer clean-out drain, and it looked clear. There is no sign of damage to the inside of the can. It is doubtful that any damage would be done, even if you started the engine and ran the bleach through the system. Now, if you started it and it died, and you left it in the system, there is a slight chance that there would be damage done. Most bleach you buy at store is 3%, very weak. Pool bleach is 6%. The powdered pool bleach is between 35% and 65%. Aluminum does not like bleach, but very little damage is done to it.
You ask what I base my statements on? Experience, I know that everyone is just trying to help you, but, just like sugaring the tank, most of the fables are just that. As was said earlier, gas and sugar do not mix, It may plug the fuel filter. Now, jello on the other hand.... - Born_To_TravelExplorerCalling the dealership would be fine if it was not the weekend.. This guy had a short period of time to get that stuff out of his tank, and he did a great job of that.. People who would have just ran it and let the water separator drain it out would have been needing some serious fuel system repairs.. It is not the water in the bleach you have to worry about.. It is the chlorine and it is highly corrosive.. Not meant to be in a fuel system..

hr - use some fuel conditioner designed to encapsulate water for a tank or two - this and your water filter/separator should take care of any residue. - Canadian_RainbiExplorer

Canada Rainbird.. I build very large Diesel engines worth $600,000 a copy and the marine version sells for 1.2 mil. a copy.. And I have been doing mechanical work for 35 years.. If you can find someone with more experience on a Sunday afternoon go for it.
I did not intend to doubt your expertise, in fact I had not read your post. After reading the first three pages I realised that no one had suggested calling the manufacturer so far so I skimmed the rest looking for that response. Not seeing one, I made my comment.
I have received some excellent professional as well as non professional but experience advice on this forum. Unfortunately I have seem some pretty stupid suggestions as well. Fortunately, those were almost always followed by several responses saying "NO! DON'T DO THAT!". - hrExplorerThanks Sully2 When your down on yourself for doing somthing stupid its nice to hear that you might have done somthing right to take care of it.I HOPE
- Sully2ExplorerHousehold bleach s only about a 6% solution...so what you basically did was dump a pint of WATER in your fuel.....your water separator will remove it
- hersheyExplorerHR, I'm probably the only one who will be in your corner on your solution. I'm bettin' your going to be in good shape with what you have done. Keep us informed as to any changes so we can all learn from your experience.
- Born_To_TravelExplorerGood luck hr!.. I think you made the right decisions and I know what a terrible job you just went through.. If you had waited until Monday and called the insurance company or a repair shop the damage would have already been done.. I think you caught it in time.. Try and run some fuel through the engine and top off the fuel tank.. Keep spare fuel filters like you say and I think you will be ok..
