directv question

I have the nil package. If the game is on one of my local channels at home it is blacked out. If I am not at home and out of my local area will it still be blacked out? Is the black out controlled by where you are registered or which satellite zone you are in when traveling?

    It's called a spot beam.

  • True Jim, but interesting that when I am in California my ESPN game selections are still Midwest so I get my UW games and not UCLA. Now if I have campground cable the ESPN is West Coast. So some of it has to do with the location of the receiver- local- and others the location of the subscription. It seems to be between local, over the air, and those known as cable. Not having locals is no concern to me although if I had them I could use DVR to record but this NfL Sunday ticket will treat me as if I am in Midwest no matter where I am. Basically it is a home based system and the RV use is secondary and nice to have however it is good for DTV as well because if I could not use it in motorhome I would have cable.
  • CRASSER: Simply put, it's called a "spot beam" from your location...maybe 100(?) miles in diameter.
Move more than 100 miles away, you'll be able to get all the "cable" stations (CNN. FOXNEWS, Discovery, History, etc., etc. etc.), but the local networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.) will not play.
For the local networks, I simply use my over-the-air "batwing" directional and amplified antenna. All my stuff goes thru a passive junction box, so I just push the correct button and there we are.
((When in, say Phoenix, why would I care what the weather is in NYC?))

  • Thanks I was afraid that was the case. I think I will need to use my sling box and stream it in from home Tv to get the packers
  • I had the same problem when my service and mailing address were the same in Sioux Falls. Green Bay, Detroit, St Louis, Minnesota games with my team (Browns) were always blacked out. I changed my service address to where we were staying on the Oregon coast, now the only games blacked out are Seattle, which is OK with me.

I had the NFL package. My Steeler games are blackout, no matter where I am located.

You could call DTV and have your home address change to your current address. You'd then be able to receive your home team in your new location.

FWIW, there is no way that DTV can tell where you are located.
  • I am referring to the NFL package that I purchase wit directv. It allows me to watch any game on Sunday is located in the 700's. One glitch. If the game is on one of my local channels it will be blacked out on the 700's as I could watch on the local. When I am traveling and cannot get my locals because I am out of area I wonder if it won't be blocked out on the 700's. Basically my question was is the blackout determined by my home location or the satellite streaming into my traveling location?
  • If you go online and into your Directv account, there are two addresses..first is your billing address...second is your service address. Billing is where the bill goes to...service is where you're parked. Every time I move to a new location, I have to change my service addess. Then for an extra $5 a month, you can get the local channels where you are at..it will not pick up your home channels. You will get the major channels from the closest city..Been doing this for 9 years and works fine.

I was never able to pickup my local TV subscription on DIRECTV when I was outside my local ZIP CODE area...

Only way for us to watch the NATL BROADCAST channels was to tune them in using the OTA BATWING antenna from the local towns we was near using the Trailer regular TV setup..

This was a few years back so maybe things have changed now...
