Drop Down TV Addition

I've been looking at some newer MH and some have the drop down TV and some don't in the years of interest. Since this is a feature that is high on my list I'm wondering what it would take to simply plan on having one installed if necessary.

Of course my backup plan is to install one in my existing coach if practicle.

Has anyone done this retrofit??? What are the pitfalls and etc??
  • I saw this in a 2015 Thor Feather River Class A unit. The dealer is checking for me also. The flat screen fits onto the unit and is secured at the ceiling. It opens and swings up allowing the cubby where the old big TV's would be to be used for storage. When it closes, it is secured by a round magnet in each of the bottom corners.
  • Another thought is to use a projector. Mount your screen so it can be retracted easily. Then find a good location at other end for the projector. They have really gotten good and small. So you really want a Tv that high? Lot's of options with new tech.
  • Thanks guys.

I did a bit of digging around and it looks like a flush mount for a 46" TV would go for about 3K. Add in another 1K for professional installation and it looks like the whole job could be done for ~5k or so.

That falls within my original guess-t-mate and is acceptable for planning purposes.
  • I actually did this on a 93 Navigator I previously owned. That RV had a farily substantial roof assembly. I fabricated the frame to fit in between the cross members and drilled and bolted it in several places. I spring loaded the assembly to make it easier to raise or lower. I did not install a motor to operate it electrically. When I had it all installed I made an oak frame around it to match the cabinets in the RV. Had a lot of people comment on it and it worked great. Had a 40 inch tv mounted in it. Of course if I had it to do over, I would probably purchase something electric already made. In my case the RV had already suffered a refrigerator fire so I was replacing the ceiling anyway.
  • I have an older gasser RV with the usual smallish TV-zone up front. I have already swapped the old crt TV for a 22" LCD, but I want a BIGGER TV, of course. My problem is not the mount, I can weld that. Finding the location of the aluminum roof ribs was a problem until I happened to be standing on my stick and brick house roof early one morning and noticed the the dew on the RV's roof had settled all over the roof, but much less above each metal rib. I could see the layout of the whole roof structure and front two side-to-side ribs perfectly. I didn't start my latest project then, but have filed this info for future use.
My RV just happens to be parked close-by, but the effect would still be visible elsewhere.
A mount would have to be quite stout, even with a very light LED TV/mount combo, since the usual travel shaking could degrade the fastening without much warning unless it was welded. So I am considering changing the mount location to behind the current TV location, up above the cabinets. I could REALLY secure it there, since it wouldn't be as visible. I'd just put a gentle bend in the mount arm.

There should be "Ribs" in the ceiling, You want a TV mount that attaches to these ribs.. Easily designed and built in today's flat screen world. I have ideas but I'm going to leave it to your cabinet maker.
  • Thanks for the replies.

My intention would be to flush mount the unit and typically there is plenty of room assuming the mount is ~4" thick or so. I suspect though the AC duct would need to be modified.

Some coaches I looked at a flush mount was a option that was not purchased.

If I use my current coach as an example wiring would be simple but the mounting location would inhibit entry when lowered. I can't see that as a problem since it would simply be raised when not in use or just duck under. Space wise, it looks on the surface I could easily fit a 42 or 46" flat screen.

I would be concerned with mounting things to the ceiling. probably will require some extra installed supports in the ceiling to make it totally safe. Perhaps your MH will have something like this already in place.

Every thing these days is very thin walls (and celings) and nothing between the ceiling and the roof except blown-in foam Insulation...

If you have a nice solid place to install something like this in the ceiling then go far it...

Some DOT rules of course apply here where the ceiling mounted TV cannot be viewable by the driver of the vehicle etc... Other MH TV mounts may be required to GO OFF LINE when the ignition key is turned ON. Be sure to check out all the DOT laws on this in your licensed state.

  • Finding a mount that does not cost a arm and leg for one. Look into it a few years back and but the mount was very costly. Next , do you have room to cut into the ceiling or are you doing surface mount. What do you have to mount too. Can you pull wiring to the location.
