Electric Steps

Mine is all fixed, the switch on the screen door was about 1/16 inch apart from each other. I moved it over and no problems since.

The magnet is usually a small bar on the screen door that comes close enough to the switch to make the reed switch close. The magnet is usually an inch or less in length. There are no wires to the magnet but there should be 2 wires leading from the switch. These are both found on the side of the door away from the hinge.

Kwikee provides a simple test in the manual or online to test the various components of the system. This is done by taking ohm readings at the main power plug to determine if the controller, magnet switch, motor or grounds are bad.

Mine did exactly the same thing while in Florida this winter....someone driving next to me waved me down and told me my steps where going in and out while driving. Only did it when the step was in the "on" position. If I turned the step switch off it didn't do it. I'm getting a few things done at the dealer but I will be interested to hear if yours is the magnet or the ground.

Also, check the ground. Mine would act erratically and I checked the ground wire and found it was mounted to the back of the step box whick I don't even think is steel. I think it's aluminum. I moved it to the frame and it worked perfectly since.

please let this widow know where the magnet is located on the screen door. This a new motorhome but getting in to the dealer is risky with the steps out all the time

My 2003 Damon Intruder works as expected. If the ignition is in the run position, the steps are in if the door is closed, and out if the door is open.

If the ignition is NOT in the run position (IE OFF), the steps WILL extend if the door is opened.

If the ignition is NOT in the run position (IE OFF), the steps will NOT retract if the door is closed.

If at any time the DOOR IS OPEN, the step is deployed.

If you parked, the step is deployed, you start the engine with the door closed, the step retracts.

I'm not certain you solved anything in the operation sequence but you have fixed something not right with your RV.

Mine have never extended without permission but have failed to retract when I start the engine door closed .. This is a problem, I think I know why they do that.

BUT.... I did the following

From auto parts store I got a automotive door jam switch, There are assorted designs of these but functionally most all of them work as follows

No pressure on plunger, Switch is closed (It is a "normally closed" switch)

And a L-Bracked from the buliding supply store THe one I have is fairly thin metal and about 1" wide by 1" on a side_

Driled hole in bracket and mounted switch

Mounted bracket to steps frame (The part bolted to the motor home) in such a way that when RETRACTED the steps press the button and open the switch

The electronics

12 volt from IGNITION FUSED----12 volt LED assembly-----Switch

If the steps extend.. LIGHT ON

I replaced my magnet. Found one in a security alarm that fit in the door way better. Had to reseat the switch as well. You may have to get new double face tape. If checking/adjusting the magnet does not solve the issue, trace the wires and check the wall switch, wiring and motor. Be careful to not to get your fingers in the steps. You could break or lose one if if they close in your hand.
