Ever denied parking spot even though you legally fit?

I was reading parking laws of some of the places we plan on visiting and I noticed parking bans that were very general like "No RV Parking". Has anyone ever been denied parking JUST because they fit the description of an RV, even though their B would legally fit in a standard spot?

  • There is a big difference between a Camper Van, and a Class B. A Class B is an RV, so if you have a Class B "RV" follow the rules, or take your chances of getting a ticket, or towed. Pretty simple.
Size, or how it's registered is usually irrelevant.
  • That is insane. Sounds like the best move after that is to a less repressive area of the country.

Here in Austin, if you have a "B", it is welcome pretty much anywhere (I've yet to see a sign banning them.) Parking garages are verboten, but that is due to physical limits (unless one has a Sportsmobile pop-top or similar.)

It sounds like 'they' made the next move....and you lost the battle. :E
  • At the end of the day it's their rules. They could decide no orange or purple vehicles allowed, no dirt vehicles allowed, whatever.
  • The quandary about the B's being just a van or not will always come up.

Try going down town in Chicago. I drove a PLAIN ordinary personal van downtown for a doctors appointment. Because vans don't fit in underground parking I headed for the open air lot.

Pulled in and the attendant promptly told me that would be $100.00 please.:E

Seems they have a firm set rule about vans. Since construction workers drive vans the city of Chicago feels they should pay $100 per day for parking their construction vans while they are working there no matter if its there 1 hour or 1 day.

  • I was asked to move at Meteor Crater, Az, in the Tiger. They have a two lots, one for regular vehicles and one a bit lower down for RV's and trucks. I fit fine in a space in the 'car' lot. While I was getting ready to go in, a 'park ranger-type' walked up and told me to move it to the RV lot. When I asked why, she said that other RV's would see it and think they could park there, too. Of course, it's taller and more 'RV looking' than most B's of similar length. So I moved.

  • Find out what their definition of an "RV" is. Most Bs look like conversion vans, mine is licensed and has passenger vehicle license plates. I would ignore any such ban and park, let them make the next move.
  • I've never had that problem. However, just because your unit will fit into a parking spot does not mean you are allowed to park at that location.

If the ordinance or law states that there is no RV parking, it means RV's are not allowed to park at that location. Size has nothing to do with the parking situation.

The local municipality apparently does not want people parking and living it RV's at certain locations.
It doesn't matter if you park there for an hour or a week, your RV is not wanted at that location.
