Extended warranty - is it worth it

Looking at purchasing a class C motorhome - 2008 with about 30k miles on it. Warranty ranges from $1500 to $3200 bumper to bumper for 48 mos. I kind of feel like 48mos on a 2008 with 30k miles on it isnt that good of a deal since it still has a lot of life on it - and isnt the chassis still under warranty at that point?

Anybody have any experience with these either way?
  • if one has the pocket change available to "put the money in the bank", perhaps paying that money as additional down payment would be wiser?

  • You know..a 2008 with ony 30,000k's is almost a hanger queen. So..depending on the cost and duration of the plan, it is not a bad thing to consider. I bought one my last and never used it but I did kinda like the peace of mind it offered me for the year of the plan.

Should you do decide to get one, if you were to look at reviews, the..THE most common reason for plan admins to reject a claim is oil changes, or apparent lack there-of. Get one as required by your documents..and have it done at a shop..even a quickie lube place...then you have documentation. You may want to do it yourself..and if you are insisting on that? then spend the 50 or 60..have it done somewhere then run home and re-do it. But get that written bill for proof of having had an oil change as specified.

  • There are multiple threads on this topic. You can search for them. The consensus is always no, don't waste your money.
  • Statistically, 78% of warranties are never used ,that's all warranties not just RV's. The deductibles and what's not covered should be read very carefully.

Most important for me as another poster stated, availability of having the work done. IF you have an issue on the road who can repair it, who honors your warranty etc. Take that money and put it in the bank. Mobile RV repair is one route. Engines and running gear in todays coaches easily will go 200K miles. If it gives you peace of mind go for it, if you want to save money, ignore it. Most of the time it's piddly stuff that goes wrong, your warranty will expire before your appliances will. Sure Joe saved thousands because his issue was covered, but Moe never used his and is out thousands.
  • No way I would buy it. They're just a money maker for those companys and if you skip those plans over your lifetime you will be ahead by many thousands - even if you have to pay for some repair.
However, if you do buy one keep in mind that you dont have to pay thier asking price. Offer them MUCH less and stick to your guns.

Now I know someone will chime in about how the policy paid for thousands in repairs and how glad they were to have it.
That is the exception to the rule!! Statistics prove it.
