Heater valve on a National Tropical

I have a 2004 Tropical pusher and the valve that opens and closes the hot water, that would heat the drivers compartment, must be stuck shut. I am pretty sure the selinod valve is somewhere up front just don't see it nor do I really know what shape it might be. Any help would be appreciated.
All these valves are probably similar in the motorhome industry. Oh yes, I will not need the heater for at least a few months but would just like to replace that valve before I head south in October.
Thanks to anyone that can help
Jack
  • You might want to go to IRV2.com and post on the National site for more help. Looking at the front of a 2004 tropical it appears to be an access panel on your front that I think is how you access your generator but not sure how it comes out. I think you will get more help going to the IRV2 site.
  • Thank you Koda55. While looking for that valve yesterday I figured I saw it because of the heater hoses. I wondered how I would get to it it was so high up in front. Now I know that is what I saw. I am not sure but I did not think my generator slid out. I thought it was bolted in place.
One other question. My backup lights do not work. I think it is because there is a switch somewhere that is not working. My trans works off of a push button selector. Any suggestions?
    Thanks again for the help
  • Hope you can open this. It is the troubleshooting manual. My valve is located inside the front cap. To access it I have to put the generator out. It is located up in the left hand corner as you are facing the front. Just follow the heater hoses on the inlet side of the heater. You can pull this valve out. There are 2 clamps. You will loose some antifreeze. Turn the key on and have someone cycle the a/c and heat knob from cold to hot. The inside of the valve should open and close. After putting it back together start the engine and put it at high idle and let the engine heat up. After the engine is hot and the switch to hot see if the inlet side for the heater is hot and the outlet side is just as hot. If you have no heat at the inlet valve your valves at the engine might be shut off. www.evanstempcon.com
  • Chances are it is an Evans Temcon unit which are common in RV's ! Also common is the failure of the control/ mixing Valve!
I have removed the valve and replaced it for the time being with a simple on-off in line fluid valve.
I have recently read about a replacement valve from another source that appears to solve the problem.
  • I would be guessing it is a cable operated hot water valve. I have found them for cars at any auto parts store. I asked for a heater valve for a 67 Chevelle, and they where able to locate one. It took a couple of minutes tops!

As for finding your valve, you can crawl under the RV and start looking for the hot water lines.

Also if you have a water coolant filter, try changing that too. It might be the coolant filter is inline with your hot water heater hose, so that if it plugs, you will not get hot water to the front. Just a thought.
