How have you had success selling your used motorhome?

I'm not sure where this should be posted and I did snoop around with some searches but didn't find any help.

I'm selling my motorhome. Love it but kids are growing and we're looking at fifth wheels with bunkhouses. I don't want to trade and take the loss I would have to take. I have the unit listed on two websites. As I used these websites to research when I was learning and deciding years ago.

If you've had success selling a coach yourself, not on a trade or consignment, can you share your tips or suggestions? I have a price I'm comfortable with and NADA says is in the ballpark.

  • We live in a small community and we parked ours in a large commercial parking lot (with permission of owner) and sold it and had cash in my pocket within 48 hours. We showed it 3 times, but the 2nd showing was the one that showed up at our bank with the cash first.

I know this won't work in many places, but it is worked well for us.

X2. In our recent search for a clean, well cared for, one owner motorhome, it was amazing at some that were listed as 'really clean' or 'like new' were nasty. Scrub it well inside and out or pay someone to detail it for you. First impressions are important.

If it's priced right, it will sell.
How true that is. People (myself included) don't care to haggle.
  • If it's priced right, it will sell.

I learned that in a business class over 30 years ago and have yet to see it proven wrong. It doesn't matter if you're in a seller's or buyer's market, someone is looking for your product. Price it right and kiss it good-bye.

I just sold my motorhome after having it for sale for over 6 months. I had it listed in several free RV websites and Craigslist. I also bought an ad in RV Trader and didn't get one response. I kept lowering the price as time went by to be in line with identical units that were for sale by private parties across the country. Needless to say, dealers with identical units were asking considerably more than what I was asking for mine. I think the reason my moho took so long to sell was because it was only two years old and the cost was still too high for many buyers looking for a used RV.

Make sure you ads are very informative. Don't skimp on details and pictures. I had a link in my ads to a Photobucket album with 70 pictures of the motorhome. I also provided interested buyers with a copy of the build sheet.

You will get countless phone calls from companies claiming to have ready buyers for your RV or they can advertise it for you in several website for a fee in the hundreds of dollars. Don't waste your money or time with these scammers. Slam the phone in their ear if they call you.

Make sure to refresh and renew the Craiglist ads and use different geographical areas for more exposure. Don't forget to renew expired ads in the free RV websites as well.

    Good luck!
  • I wouldn't imagine this time of year to be good for selling a MH.

I have found that a high (or even reasonable) asking price is a turn off to private buyers. I don't understand that as we all know dealers ask too much, but for some reason it doesn't work that way in private sales.
  • I sold mine in 16 hours. This got to be a record! What I did is research the market. I looked at the prices that this unit sold for lately. Not what people were asking for. There could be a big gap between the two.

Of course there's also the timing and the condition of the resale market.

    Good Luck!
  • Did you get any good hints on selling? We are in thet boat now.
