How to support a jack knife sofa over hang

Everyone on here comes up with brilliant solutions so I thought I would throw this out there. When our jack knife sofa is made into a bed it has about a two foot overhang. It sags and you feel like you are going to roll out on to the floor! I also worry it is just going to collapse since it is just out there in mid air! Is there any way to brace it or put some kind of support under it?

Thanks! I know someone will come up with the perfect solution!

  • NC-Hawk I tried lifting the kick plate and it is stationary. We have no dinette across from it. Our table is under the sofa. Thanks for trying to help!
  • I know this does not solve your problem....but...do you just need one person to sleep on the jackknife sofa?

If so, I have always found them to be much more comfortable sleeping when they are "un-jacked", i.e., just lay on the sofa. That is if they are long enough!
  • Doesn't the lower front (kick panel?) of the jack-knife sofa pull out to support the overhang? Mine does, and will even flip up (with extended connected support bars) to make the sleeping surface even wider.

With the jack-knife sofa extended out and butting up against the drop down dinette converted, makes the sleeping area king size plus.
  • Thanks for the ideas! Thinking about the foot stool gave me an idea. I have limited space in my 26 footer so thought about why not use the folding camping step under it. It is easy to store , has flat surface for the overhang to sit on and the stool does have a 300 lb weight limit so it should hold up the overhang & an average size person. Thanks so much for the ideas!
  • Well, I certainly know exactly what your referring to. My wife found a foot stool/rest at a Thrift store that has an angled cushion. I wedge this in the center of the overhang and it doesnt move at all. Makes for a very secure feeling!
  • It may sound a little weird but when I had the same problem I measured the distance from the bottom of folded out bed to the floor,on each corner.

Then went to the bike store and got a Kickstand and found one that was close to the right size and cut it to size and bolted it to the bottom of the overhang.

Folded it out when I needed it then folded it back when I folded the bed back up.

Worked great and fit under the couch just fine. :)
