Howdy from SE Texas

My name is Kelly and I'm in the Houston area.
You could classify me as a true motorhead as I've always had a passion for building, then enjoying, and racing motorized vehicles.
I'm hoping y'all may assist me with some insight with my newest spur of the moment purchase.
Last weekend I purchased a bus conversion at a storage facility auction. I think it may be a potential classic or a classic mistake like I've made once or twice.
The unit is titled as a 1968 Challenger MH
Researching the web it appears to be a MCI 5A based on my image searches.
She has 142k on odo and was last seen driven 2 years ago.
There are 2 rather newish looking rooftop AC units, and has an onboard diesel generator.
I've taken it to my heavy mechanics shop where our dumptrucks and excavation equipment is serviced for a survey/mechanical inspection.
Judging by what I've seen it looks as though it was built as a touring coach and was never a passenger bus.
I joined to ask some avid enthusiasts for their input on this bus.
My objective is to pull my cigarette boat with it but after my measuring my bus plus trailer length combined I may be to long for DOT.
If it doesn't achieve my application I'll probably sell or use it to pull a trailer full of dirt bikes and 4 wheelers when we do our annual national forest camp outs.
j just think the latter isn't worthy if she could be found by another owner who would place it back to her former glory and utilize her as originally intended.
I'm at my son's home watching football and don't know how to attach photos w/cellphone.
Sorry to write you guys a book,I look forward to any & all insight and will try to post pics later
Thanks,
Kelly
  • no one ever thinks their an avid RV'er until its 100+ degrees or freezing out and they can retire to the "COACH" for a nice solid evening of sleep w/ a warm shower and coffee in the morning (even when it RAINS) !

we use our coach like a GIANT station wagon...got it, might as well use it

That, my internet ftiend, is DOGGONE good advice!!!
    Thanks,
    Kelly

  • Here you go Grindstone,

Thanks y'all for the welcome, but it may be short lived!!!
I also joined a busconversion website and got my bubble busted when noting my application to haul a 15000lb triple axle trailer with electric over hydraulic brakes on all 3.
Their advice is that due to the nature of frame construction of this bus it wasn't advisable to utilize her for this application and she was set up as a pusher not a tugger with a rear subframe holding the engine bay.
I had no idea at the time I was bidding on the bus as I assumed that she wouldn't even feel the load. Apparently she carries a very high first gear and this would be hard on the driveline. We're going to check the final drive ratio stamping as there are lower gearsets that may be available unless I have the lowest and if there is a heavy duty clutch/preesure plate available. And for the possibility of reinforcijg to handle the load if the powertrain issues can be wotked out.
If it doesn;t work out I'll have to sell her as I really wouldn't consider myself an avid RV'r. I can't justify ownership by just using it for our 2-3 annial motorcycle camping trips. We always pitch tents and Mom never comes but she might in the bus, I also considered leasing it out on occasion but think it's a really dumb idea of risk to owner.
I've only spent very little time aboard just goin through random stuff of the previous owner.
I'm trying to stay optimistic and am crossing my fingers, LOL!!!

    See ya,
    Kelly

For crying out loud I've just spent well over an hour and 4 resize attempts to post these.
Anyone have any ideas??? the board is showing 640 wide and I can't seem to find where my preference link is on the forum

    Kelly

WOW!!! A month of Sundays and I finally got it LOL!!!

    Nice looking Challenger.

Soooo, how about some pictures of that Cigarette? :)
  • Good Luck with your new Coach! To my knowledge MCI has a history of building solid coaches.

  • I'm not much of a computer guy!!!
    Hopefully I did this right

I took these pic's w/my phone as we approached the unit with the auctioneer and the crowd of storage wars wannabes LOL!!!
A little history on the RV is the gentleman had it for many decades, was best guess in his late 80's, and believed to have been passed into our Lord's embracing hands, no family responded to the many certified letters of intent to auction.
He used it several times a year until a couple of years ago when he used it just once that summer. He would come frequently to polish the stainless body panels. The owner of the storage park's wife was just about in tears when we executed the auction documents necessary to title.
Other than dust and spiderwebs she needs elbow grease to clean her up and then find out how my mechanic feels she did on the survey for complete road worthiness. I told him to let me know what he'd do with it if it was his and had a 2000 mile road trip possibility in spring.
When you walk indoors she's a step back in time for sure. If I do keep her I'll go back as close to the stock look as possible and not bring it into the new world contemporary look.
Are there any vintage bus enthusiasts on this board or do any of y'all know of some other forums which may be more relevant.
Thanks for any and all insight as to this unit and it's Mfg and some other ways to get info

    See ya,
    Kelly
