And I should point out here, I'm from California so steep windy roads on the edge of cliffs are no big deal to me. When you see people telling you to stay off Highway 1 in a motorhome check their profile and you'll see they are often from a flat state. I understand where they're coming from. If you're used to driving through soybeans and cornfields then Highway 1 can be a little scary. But if you don't have a fear of heights and you can handle your motorhome, it is a doable road in a 40 foot and under motorhome. I've seen semi-trucks with 40 foot trailers out on Highway 1 taking supplies in to the communities on the road.
Very good point! - jsmartExplorerDid it this summer from LA to Santa Cruz. Hwy 1 is awesome, unfortunately for me, I was driving! They had a bike race the same day we headed north, so if you don't mind twisty, winding road with killer views of the ocean and the cliffs while passing bikes with a 32' pulling a toad - - then go for it. We had a wonderful time, but I grew up in Colorado 4-wheeling so the winding and cliffs didn't bother me, can't say the same for some of the bikes I passed!
Did see several other MH's out there on the road. - msmith1199Explorer IIAnd I should point out here, I'm from California so steep windy roads on the edge of cliffs are no big deal to me. - msmith1199Explorer IIHigher fuel prices on Highway 1? It's 150 miles from Monterey to San Luis Obispo on Highway 1. The cost of fuel is not an issue.
Also if you do the route in your motorhome it's best to do it from North to South. Most of the turnouts are on the ocean side of the road and there are plenty of places to pull over and enjoy the view. - dbatesExplorerWe did most of that route several years ago. Our MH is only 32' but if the driver wants sight see you sure don't want to be driving any MH. We camped on 101 near hwy 46, drove the toad half way to Monterey on hwy 1, returned to MH, drove the MH up 101 to Monterey, camped there and round tripped the north half of hwy 1 in the toad.
With a toad if you miss something you can easily turn around & go back, toad parking is readily available and with the higher fuel prices on hwy 1 it’s less expensive.
Dave - msmith1199Explorer III've done it several times in my 35' DP with a Dodge Dakota toad and it was just fine. I wouldn't recommend doing it on a weekend in the summer just because of all the traffic out there, but otherwise it's fine in a legal length motorhome. If you're scared of heights, or not comfortable driving your rig, then take 101.
- DSDP_DonExplorerIt's a neet road if you like to see the back of your toad in the turns!!!!
- CresproExplorerEven with a 40 foot rig, driving north last year was very uncomfortable. You are within two feet of the rock wall on some turns. Not recommended for anything larger, and as noted it is not permitted under CA law.
- falconmanExplorerWe just did that stretch a few weeks ago in our car. Wouldn't attempt in the MH, especially with a toad. You will be holding everyone up and doubtful you can keep in your lane while making some of those sharp turns. Not worth it. Even if CHP isn't actively enforcing it, they should be. There are too many idiots on that stretch of roadway and we saw several passing on the wrong side over the double yellow lines on blind curves. It's great scenery for the passengers but the driver is too busy watching the road.
- kalynzooExplorerNO! Steep cliffs, shear drop, narrow 2 lane twisty highway without shoulders. Breathtaking beautiful. Make it a day drive in the car! Really!
