Icemaker -- other uses?

We’re looking at late-90’s high-end DP motorhomes. A common feature included is a separate icemaker.

In the very unlikely event that we want ice while camping, we will buy a bag for a buck-and-a-half at the nearest convenience store. As an icemaker, for us it is dead weight and takes up valuable space.

I’m pondering other uses. What have you used it for?

I’ve thought that it could be a small extra freezer if I could take out the icemaking apparatus.

Or, I could maybe take it out and build something useful in its place, or at least use the empty spot for the kitchen trash can.

Or . . . Any other ideas?

I’m not sure if the presence of an icemaker should be a big black mark on a motorhome I’m looking at. I would never use it for making ice.

  • If not using for an ice maker, a freezer makes sense to freeze the items you want frozen before you put them in your dometic or Notcold.
As you know, putting fresh lbs to freeze with your already frozen items raises the temperature considerably in the freezer compartment. This continual operation will cause food to spoil faster than you may think.

The Uline or Dometic costs approx 1500.00 dollars if it is anything like the two I have used.

Ice made at that speed is great if you plan on a knee operation or anything related that requires cold compression.

You may not be part of the party but someone always appreciates an abundance of ice in the campground. make new friends...break the ice

Great for the geo people that recommend ice cubes in the black tank to bang around down there and clean it out while driving.

Better yet to fill a cooler on a hot day or for a toad trip.

Assist your "on the way out" norcold refrigerator with buckets of ice in the frig to save your food.

Nothing quite like serving crab and prawns "on ice" under the awning in sizzling heat.
  • We had the ULine in our Dynasty. Loved that it made ice as quickly as it did. The problem with store bought ice is that it's quick frozen, meaning it contains lots of air. That makes the ice cubes melt quicker. Don't believe it? Put the same number of cubes in a glass from your ice maker and store bought. Cubes will melt in half the time. Anyway, if you're dead set on using the store bought variety, simply use the ice maker as an additional freezer. We did that on several occasions when we bought too much food for the freezer. I would live with what you've got for a few trips to see if you like it more than you think you will....Dennis

  • I had the U line in my last two coaches and loved it. Muss it now in this coach but now have a residential unit so I have a good ice maker again. It was great for when we had parties at home too.
