Installing new Firestone Coil Rite Air Spring kit

We have a 96 A Class Hurricane sitting on a Chevy p30 chassis. The front has always been slammed to the ground and without auto levelers we've had to shim up the font wheels on thick boards to lever it out when parked. Finally I got around to ordering the air spring kit and was curious if anyone has any suggestions. First off I haven't a jack to lift the font to decompress the spring but I do have enough room to scoot underneath to work. Is it possible to install these with the spring compressed? If I get the air bags installed is it ok to inflate these to raise the front off the ground or dose the front need to be up before inflating the bags?

Yeah, as you can see I got a few other projects in line. New roof vents and black tank tornado rinse kit to install. Good thing were in Florida...

  • I replaced the air bags in my 96 Rexhall Aerbus this summer. I jacked the front up and removed the tire to do it. It was a miserable job and I could not see doing it without the rv being lifted and the tire removed.
That's just my experience. That being said, it really improved my ride and handling and cost me less than $100 to do.
  • On My 96 Rexhall P30 chassi I had an rv place replace the old front coil springs with firestone air bags with weight rated springs and no longer use air bags this along with other work done has been an improvement ride and handleing Good Luck

Oh man, I hope it raises it just a little. I said it was slammed but maybe perhaps it isn't that low. We have the RV loaded down with weight. The old coil rite bags that were there were so brittle, all I had to do was put my fingers in the coil and pull out pieces and chunks. Here is a close up pick of the front tire. Most RV's that I see ridding level, you can see at least over top of the tire through the wheel well. Thats where I'd like to see ours right now.
  • The P30 front coil air bags were not to "raise" the front end. They are Chevy OEM required equipment to RAISE the front carrying capacity and keep the front end suspension in correct alignment. They are not there for ride comfort. IF your front end is too low in front, you may have weak coil springs also. You do not have to raise the front to inflate the new bags. You WILL need to get the front end up higher to change the bags. Doug
  • And I thought I was the only class A owner small enough to get under the coach without lifting it. As long as there's enough clearance between the lower A arm and the ground to get the drill in place for step #2 of the instructions and get the bag in place you should be OK. Once the bag is in it should be good to inflate without the need to lift the front but just to be sure first fill them with a few pounds of air to see how well they are expanding within the spring before going to full recommended pressure

If not Northern Tools sells a very good 12 ton jack and matching jack stands for less than $100. Before I installed hydraulic levelers I used them to level at camp sites if we were staying someplace more than a weekend. 12 ton might be a bit of over kill but it makes for a good safety margin.
