iowa to the carolinas-any must see??

hello we are leaving for north and south Carolina in two weeks to complete the lower 48 states. My wife is an avid civil war buff. What areas, towns etc would you consider as "can't miss". wanted to do the Shenandoah valley , play some golf tour several civil war areas and generally enjoy a state we have not been. any and all advice is appreciated. there is also a 100 mile long windy scenic rode somewhere near the Shenandoah valley area ???.thanks in advance tom ps we have 2 weeks to spend there
  • Well there is the skyline drive and it is 105 miles long as well as the blue ridge parkway. There are lots of golf courses in WInchester Front Royal area as well as battlefields. You can go east about 50 miles and you can be at Bull Run where it all started. You can go north into into Antentiem as well as east a bit off I 81 is Chancellorsville. ALso Gettysburg is not far away too.

Over by Iowa is the Quad Cities there is Rock Island Armory and museum and they were also a northern prison where lots of southern soldiers died.
  • Do a Google search for `______ tourism' and put the city, state, area or whatever in the blank.
  • We run the reverse route SC to WI twice a year. Good things to see are Monmouth Cave in KY, Biltmore (Vanderbilt Mansion) and Carl Sandburg homes near Ashville NC, and Brookgreen Gardens/Attalaya by Huntington Beach State Park (great campground) by Myrtle Beach. Also lots of plantations in SC. Have a great trip.
  • Counce, TN. Not far from Shiloh, or as the North called it, the Battle of Pittsburg Landing.
  • We really enjoyed Charleston, South Carolina. We stayed at the James Island County Park and Campground. Have a great trip.
