KVH Tracvision Flashing

Had DirectTV in coach with a KVH R5 Dome, talking to KVH is a nightmare, Switched to Dish Network, and now dome finds 110 & 119 sats fine for about 3 seconds, but keeps spinning trying to find other sats? Do I need to use the flash update wizard ? The KVH R5 is a 2006 and worked fine with no switch on DirectTv. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Ron
  • KVH is horrible to deal with. Don't throw good money after bad. Our KVH R5 was a total pain and unreliable. Did the power supply thing and updated it. Do yourself a favor and get a Winegard Travler or Tailgator. We have the Travler on our bus and a Tailgator for the little Outback. Couldn't be happier.
  • I just had to add the power supply and grounding block to my R5. The KVH part number is 72-0308, Kit Pack Antenna Power and Ground U.S. I was told by KVH not to let the dish search constantly when the voltage is low or you risk corrupting one the board's firmware.

Is your KVH R5SL powered by AC or 12 volt power? Here's why I ask - We have a KVH R5SL in motion Sat dish that we have been using with Standard Definition DVR's for the entire time we have been full-time. The only time we had a problem with the KVH was when the batteries started getting a little older in the coach and the sat dish would just spin and spin looking for a signal. Turned out to be a low voltage situation that KVH was aware of because I found a Technical Bulletin on their website recommending adding an AC power supply instead of using the 12volt that it came with. Funny thing was when talking to KVH tech reps, they didn't suggest checking the power supply. I had to hunt it down on their own website. It was published March 24, 2008.

By the way this is a 12 volt system. Seems like not enough voltage, they say it takes atleast 12.5 volts to run on 5 amp? By the book, but KVH told me min. 13.5. So will try the 120 to 12.5. Fingers crossed.

Yes, you need to update the programming using the flash update wizard, and it needs to be powered by the 120v converter instead of running off 12v coach batteries.

You are also correct, KVH technical support is virtually worthless.
Your right about KVH, and might be low voltage by what you say, when I hook up pc to 9 pin main board nothing is coming across screen but can put in commands ? I typed in SATINSTALL,TRISAT,DISH went to pinging for sats and came back with 56000 No Carrier? Restarted system power several times, keeps saying waiting for reset ? Must be another power source to a fuse Im not finding outside of the wall switch, but getting a 12 VDC 5 amp AC/DC power supply to see if thats the problem, low voltage? Thank you very much for your input, Ron & Corinne
