LP Onan hard start to no start.

Hello all.
The last time someone used my RV on the 4th, they said the generator was hard to start. Took a long time cranking it to start. Now I can not get it started without starting fluid and then it is like the gas finally gets to the engine. I have sprayed the heck out of all fittings with soaping water and nothing! Could this be the large regulator at the generator?
  • Hack job, but stronger now that ever before!

I pulled the regulator apart and no oil, at all. It did have some dirt in the outside part of the diaphragm. I am thinking a dirt dobber got up in that vent hose. Cleaned out and new hose from regulator to carb with new hose clamps. New plugs. Fired up right away! Maybe one turn over.
Thanks for the help always people!!

From what I am reading here my guess is the fuel pressure regulator. They get gummed up with oil that is dropped in the regulator as propane passes thru over time. Remove, disassemble and cleanup. Cleaning solvent or gasoline do the best job. Do this outdoors where there are no fire hazards and plenty of fresh air.

Will try this today. I cut off the LP and burned off what would burn on the stove. How much LP should I expect when I unhook the fuel line?

I had this same issue with mine. It was all gummed up inside with the oil that's in the propane. I had it repaired rather than do it myself. Not that it's not doable but mine wasn't on a slide out so it was gonna be a PITA. Once I got it going and back to normal I moved the feed line to the regulator from the LIQUID port to the VAPOR port. This will stop the oiling issue. I believe it is an Onan recommendation. Worked for me.

  • Good friend that plans to "use" it 8 times a year. Nothing they did to casue this I don't think. Full of gas and open. I plan to change the plugs but it starts right up with a little starting fluid, but I have to keep spraying a little to keep it running until it picks up LP. About 30 seconds.

This is the other issue I am dealing with. Happened on the way back from Savannah Friday.
  • Propane systems are notorious for gathering moisture and causing rust to form on internal metal parts, too. If the carb hasn't been cleaned/rebuilt then it might be time for that. If it can't be cleaned/rebuilt, you might have to replace the carb. Of course, it could be as simple as a stopped up orifice. As Vulcan says, check the plug first...that'll only cost you a few bucks to see if it's the problem. Oh, and are you sure you have plenty of propane and that the valve is turned on all the way? Not to oversimplify the problem, but since you let somebody else use it, they could have turned off the valve. Please post what you find!

Generally engines that run on propane do not HAVE a fuel pump.....or fuel filters for that matter. ;)

Yes, it could be the regulator causing low gas pressure.
How old is the spark plug ? That's probably the first thing I'd try.
  • You let someone else use your motor home...:h. You're sure more trusting than anyone I know.
