Microsoft Streets & Trips Program

Has anyone found a replacement for the program MS Streets & Trips ? I've been using it for years but MS has seen fit to end production.
I bought Delorme 2014, not even close and operation was very difficult, with common routing not useable.

  • I bought the new 2015 version of Delorme Street atlas, and so far am very disapointed with it. Guess I am just used to S&T, and haven't got up to speed with Delorme yet. I have a lot of trouble just trying to save maps, and even more trying to recover and reuse. POIs are missing or impossible to find, and route choices arelimited to fastest or shortest. So far, I have found several map errors in streets being in the wrong places, and unable to locate places by street names. Called DeLorme about one problem, and they did not seem to be interested.

I installed WAZE just now and it crapped out twice trying to route from my current location to Disney Cruise Line. Message received: could not connect to routing server. But, if it works for you.

Google Maps had a route planned in under 15 seconds using the same criteria.

as they say YMMV - google maps might have had the route completed in 15 seconds but its capability is marginally better than a old paper map. NON-ACTIVE routing is no better than a paper map these days.

i use was all the time running between rogers/bentonville & tulsa - works well, and combined w/ a radar detector is an extremely functional line of defense !

S&T isn't really for navigation (although it clumsily supports gps), it's main purpose is for trip planning.

Google doesn't offer a offline / desktop version of WAZE, so it's kind of useless for planning a trip in advance, imho.

there is a browser based version of WAZE available - correct its not off-line capable.
In the RARE event that i don't have a cell signal (cant remember the last time that happened) i have a GPS that i can fall back on.

FWIW i never had a problem using a gps antenna (via usb or bluetooth) when i ran MS S&T, it was perfectly fine for turn by turn GPS (like) navigation - it worked as well as any GPS.

I cant tell you the last time i planned a trip and WASNT close enough to a wireless internet connection - so being off-line is not really a problem.

Many of us can use the tethering mode on their phones to connect a laptop (if theres no other free internet wireless connection) & further GET A MiFI / personal hot spot - with the shared data plans i now have 60 GB to share between the MiFI & my smartphone - for an inexpensive $125 bucks per month.

  • I use WAZE on my phone - its better than a GPS (or MS S&T) - it takes into account REALTIME traffic feeds & because it's CROWD Sourced other users can report & alert you to objects in the road, speed traps & traffic tie-ups.

WAZE will provide alternative routing in the event of grid lock or construction.

it allows users (crowd sourced) to report WEATHER conditions as well !
You can even use it to find the cheapest fuel along your route.

One feature i like in particular is that i don't have to know the address of a location just the NAME of the campground, restaurant, grocery store, etc - type in as much as i know and it will find it or offer suggestions with similar names....once i have the location i need, its a matter of selecting it & saying "GO" to route me there.

For planning purposes and what-ifs and just sitting around daydreaming it is a great program right now and for years into the future. Possibly when driving down the road nearest cities with recent freeway construction and such you might want to fall back to an online app but I have no plans of abandoning S&T for a long long time.

X2, it's a great planning tool. I don't look at any one program as the "Holly Grail" of trip planning. The final years route is input into GPS, which is kept up-to-date, any additional information is extracted from our phones.

I have been using Delorme for years and years. What is difficult that you have trouble with? What do you mean by "common routing"?

Maybe I am doing something all wrong. I purchased the 2015 Delorme version a month ago.

Vias, setting road preferences, defining stops, transferring trip data to Spreadsheets, importing WalMarts, Pilot TS, Cracker Barrels, etc., calculating fuel costs, these are easy to do. There are a lots of RV Parks/Resorts included too.

I had an early version of MS Streets & Trips and also Trailer Life Directory trip planner. I really liked the Trailer Life trip planner.

It is 2015 and my copy of S&T 2013 still works. Are you looking to buy additional copies, or has your version stopped working (I've heard about license keys being rejected).

Being a paid, licensed user, I helped myself to a "cracked" version off the Internet, which no longer asks for a license key. This is dangerous, as a lot of "cracked" applications contain backdoors and viruses - it's not something I'd recommend just anyone attempt.

With the exception of new bypasses and such in high density areas, the highways and interstates aren't changing - as long as the program runs, it'll never really be out of date. Of course, if you use the "points of interest" features (I never do), that info was out of date in 2013 and by now is even more so.

    Just my 5 cents...
