Monaco interlocks

Our rigs has some wierd interlocks that I'd really like to change. I've seen or read that it can be done, but lost track of where to find the "how."

Basically I'd like to change everything from "is the engine running" to "is the parking brake set"

The slideouts and awnings will not work with the engine running.
The jacks require the key to be on, but the engine to be off.

Anyone have any hard info or schematics on how to change these interlocks from ignition to parking brake?
  • They make LOOK the same, but you will notice IF you look, Monaco numbers ALL their wires. ALL the wires have their OWN number. Of course, IF you have the Monaco wire schematic, then you know what wire does what. Doug
  • Why?

well let's take setting up camp...

Monaco says slides out first, then level. So I have to shut down the engine, walk to the back, put out the slides, walk back up front, turn the key on, dump the air, and level the coach.... not so bad, but would be easier to just leave it running. Would also have more power (higher voltage) to the jack motor with the engine running.

    Not so bad, right?

    What about leaving?
start the engine and wait for air pressure. Retract the jacks. Shut down the diesel, walk back, and put all four slides in... walk back up front, restart the diesel, and motor off...

What if I forgot to put the awning in?
Glance in the mirror, see the awning, stop, shut down the deisel, retract the awning, restart the diesel...

What about the time when my DW noticed the door awning flapping 2 miles down the road from the campground?
We'd just got the coach, and I'd NO IDEA the damned awning was interlocked... After hitting the switch - nuttin... unhooking the toad so I could drive up next to the coach and climb on the roof to try to do something about the damned awning... about the time i'm ready to call coachnet, I shut the diesel off cause it had been idling on the side of the road for 30 minutes, tried the switch again, and whadaya no?

IMHO, MY coach would be just as safe with these interlocks connected to the parking brake switch.

    So back to the question...
This is a monaco, ALL the wires in the main harnesses are black and/or white, no color codes to be found, you do not just "follow" a wire, they all look the same...

I "think" this is a simple matter of movinga wire on one of the connectors on the big pcb in the front run bay, question is which wires?

Saying ALWAYS is like saying NEVER ...and I ALWAYS try to avoid using those two words, cuz you just NEVER know....:S.....:B:B....Dennis

Interlocks are basically switches that switch power on or off. It should be easy enough for you to trace the wires supplying power to the items you want to control. It is YOUR coach, and YOU should make your own decisions as to whether or not you need any interlock. If your coach is out of warranty, do what you want.
Lawyers and our government control too many of our personal possessions as it is. Fine for those that need others to protect them from themselves.

I agree 100%.its your business. My MH has NO interlocks and I love that system.I can run slides with motor running which I do when dry camping to keep full power at batterys.I can put my jacks down with
engine running or not.My awning works seperate from all systems and its just plain nice to have it that way.I never worryed about park brake because I always have it on when perfroming jacks or slides etc

Just curious why..:h:h....are you planning on cruising down the freeway with your slides and/or awning deployed...??:h...the interlocks are to assist when we have a brain fart and forget to pull everything in...I know you wouldn't be able to go anywhere with your PB set, but I can't fathom why one would be better than the other to justify the aggravation for the change...just sayin....Dennis

Dennis I agree! Those are safety items that keep you from doing something that could damage the rig or you.
  • On mine, the slides/awnings will not work if the engine is running. BUT, I can use the leveling jacks while the engine is running, the only stipulation is that the parking brake is engaged. Have your tried using your jacks with the engine running.
  • Unless you have Electric Jacks or a Bigfoot Jack system, I have never seen a motorhome that the jacks would NOT run with engine running. Have you tried it? If, so, what brand jacks do you have? Doug
