- hankoExplorerI dont think my focus manual trans could be any easier. hook it up, put it neutral and go. No steering lock. I can take the key right out. charge line from the coach to the car keeps the battery up
- Pass42ExplorerSo far we have towed a 2001 Wrangler & now a 2011 Wrangler... great to tow, and they both have been reliable... and they do "ride like a Jeep"....
my old 1996 Cherokee was just taken off the road by my Grandson, because the gas tank & the straps that hold it, finally rusted out... and it needed tires & brakes.......the tranny & engine were still strong..... - dahkotaExplorerSomeone linked Consumer Reports as a reference for jeep reliability. That particular report states: "In fact, 74 percent of the owners in our most recent satisfaction survey said they’d buy one again. So what’s the problem? Driven daily on “normal” roads, the ride is punishing, handling is clumsy, and it drinks fuel like kids devour juice pouches (17 mpg overall)."
Not one word about reliability.
As for not liking the handling, if you are used to the squishy ride of a car, no you probably won't like it. I drive trucks and sports cars so I find it quite average. If you want a toad that has the squishy ride of a car, you might consider the Cherokee or Grand Cherokee, but I would stay away from the off road enhanced editions of either. And stay away from the wrangler.
We are on our third jeep (2 wranglers and a GC) and we never had any problems with reliability. They were amazing in the snow and we could go where most people couldn't.
As for Consumer Reports, I stopped reading them a long time ago. Their reports are biased, lacking comprehensive truth, and sometimes even fake. I stick to Motortrend, Car and Driver, and the like. But, I don't care what most people are driving, I want to drive what the pros like to drive.
Consumer Reports Flawed
Consumer Reports reliability - dcbrewerExplorerNot ragging on anything, but our Jeep liberty, 04 mod, had the back windows fall down three times, windows that are never used. Jeep dealer charged 285.00 the first two times, than found a after market part that wasn't plastic to fix the regulator, has been good since. Also had ball joints replaced. than throttle position sensor went out. And brake problems, and a noise from the rear end at times. Has 64000 mi. Don't think I want another Chrysler product.
- RedJeepExplorer1978 cj5. Super easy. Towed thousands of miles. No brake assist. Just swing bar down, connect lights and go.
- RVChippysExplorerWe tow a 2010 Scion xb. It is a 5 speed manual. We only use it as a dinghy so with that Toyota engine we expect to have it for many years to come.
- Mr_Mark1ExplorerAs I've posted before in this thread and others, I'm a Honda fan as it serves our purpose just fine.
I would still consider a Jeep even though my experience with both of my new Jeep Grand Cherokee's (at the time) were troublesome. My '96 had to be towed into the shop 3 times in a three years period, I drove that vehicle until 36,000 miles and traded for a '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Quardr-trac which I also drove about 36,000 miles in a 3 yr. period.
The '99 Jeep's 4x4 system had to be rebuilt twice. The Dana rear-end roared all the time. It also had to be towed under warranty as the crank shaft sensor malfunctioned. So, my experience with Jeeps was not stellar.
But, since Honda's are not towable for a future choice, I'm hoping Jeeps have gotten better than when I owned them. I think the Cherokee is a good size. The Wrangler would be too rough riding from what I've read about them and I want easy ingress/egress (I'm almost old).
MM. - obgrahamExplorerI'm not personally a Jeep fan, but there is no question that they are perhaps the most common vehicle towed behind motorhomes.
So if you like Jeeps, why would you go somewhere else?
Folks seem to like their Roadmaster and Blue Ox towbars. Go there and you will likely be happy. - JerryofWVExplorerAnother vote for Jeep. I've only had my Liberty for a year, but no problems so far.
- paintedtugboatExplorerI see more Jeep Wranglers being towed in campgrounds than any other brand. Honda CRV is not too distant second. We are full timers and a Jeep Wrangler is our toad.
