Need help ASAP. Norcold fridge not working. Dry camping.

Thanks Dennis. That was my point with the "big red crayon" but it's pretty obvious that point was missed. That disclaimer on the phone should also have been made on the forum because too many times it's not. There are plenty around way less qualified than neuman that simply reset the module or tell people even less qualified than them how to do it, and one day we will read about the results in the paper.

At the end of the day he DID explain it with a big red crayon, so what's the big problem?

Well, Dennis is correct as far as the safety part. But this is not the first time I have read that by using a magnet you can reset those black boxes and so far I have not read a single post of anybody having a fire after they reset the box. So I am not sure whether that box is really as dependable as Norcold claims it is. I know I have one on my coach and it has never given any problems. But the way I understood Newmann's post was that in a private conversation with glamisorbust, he explained what could happen if there was a problem with the refrigerator and what the consequences could be. So there must have been an understanding between the two parties.

I think to much has already been said and maybe they should close this thread.

Kudos to you both! THIS quote should have been posted as the solution instead of Newmann's reply, even though he was trying to inform everyone that you got your fridge working again.

IMHO, the issue was not with Newmann or the OP but rather posting the "Fix" without any caveats. I'm sure Newmann and the OP had conversations relative to the fix and possible consequences. Remember though, this is a public forum and to post that the 'fix' was to bypass the safety switch might lead someone else, less educated as to the dangers of doing so, to simply bypass it with possible disastrous consequences. Not everyone comes on here posting their problem. Some simply use the search feature and 'try' different things.

Anytime it's suggested to bypass a safety switch of any sort should be prefaced with an explanation of the consequences of doing so....Dennis

I did get the fridge working and saved all my food, thanks to newman. All you guys talking bad about him is not cool. He is a great guy and knows exactly what he is talking about.
Let's knock off all the trash talk. The only ones on the phone were myself and newman. He warned me of the fire risk and got it going again. Major praise to him.

the box was bad as there is a recall on them i as well educated him what to look for and the risk.

I was a coach tech for almost 10 years after I retired from the USAF, but I'm not at all knowledgeable. I just give up, this place is too damn sensitive, and narrow minded.

Right. And I assume that if the OP is smart enough to boondock, pilot an RV, join a forum to discuss said boondocking and RVing, AND is able to take on his own repair as prescribed by Newman THEN one could also assume that he's smart enough to weigh the risks of implementing the repair.

People come here for help. While we all have good intentions in providing advice, it is solely the requester's obligation to evaluate the quality of the help and to determine what to do with it. I don't think anyone would contest that.

Newman offered a fix based on his experience. The OP took the advice and did what he wanted with it. Calling Newman out, or anyone else, regarding their credentials and/or questioning a conversation that no one else was privy to is counter productive and (in my opinion) detrimental to the spirit of the forum. Threads like this discourage people from helping others.

"Helping" isn't always about telling someone how to override a safety switch. The OP stated at the beginning he had been having lots of issues with the fridge. Given Norcold's history, unless I could see the unit myself, talk to the OP in person and assess the situation, I'm not sure I'd put myself out there with that kind of "advice". I'm with Doug on this one....and the spoiled food, Leo was speaking of...well if the fridge catches on fire because the switch was bypassed, spoiled food will be the least of his problems....

All that said, I'm sure Newman provided the OP with the proper caveats and provided him with a solution. The problem is sometimes people will simply say, hmmm..the 'box' is the problem, Newmann help me reset it but it's failed again. Why not just remove it..:E....that's what I mean by being careful of the help we provide....just sayin.....Dennis

And that was the point of the comment. He did NOT say he counseled the OP on the extreme danger of fire IF it was shut down on a real failure and not just a defective module. While there have been plenty of module failures, there have also been several cooling unit failures out there with people advising to just go ahead and reset it, which is about the stupidest suggestion there is UNLESS you know why the trip.

Neuman also sent me a PM whining about my comment, to which I replied (and deleted the 2nd). If he or anyone else here doesn't like it, too bad. I have been on other forums with the same question being asked and someone comes along with the magic magnet trick fix for the OP without any mention or warning of what to do or check once they reset a failsafe device that may or may not have failed. One day someone will reset a true failed device, there will be a fire, someone will die, and the lawyers will be looking for those "qualified" people to add to the lawsuit.

I think too much is being made out of nothing. Let it go! The man got the fridge working again and that is what he was asking for.
