Oil/tranny fluid change

Mike, with only 5k miles and about a year old I don't see changing it later as a big deal. It's preferable to change it hot because when the it's cold it's more viscous (thicker) and will drain slower. This leaves a little more of the dirty oil inside the engine. Also, a higher flow rate is desirable because it will allow more contaminates to flow out the drain. With that said, if it was really old or had many miles on it I would do it cold, but in your case I say let it go until you get back. In the future I would do it in the fall when you put it away for the season. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Drain oil asap with a new filter cold. Check fuel filters also.

Let tranny go until late spring or summer and do it all with both filters, etc, etc. Go with Transynd then!!

Check coolant level...grease slack adjusters on the air brakes and give the driveshaft a hit of grease.

All will not be lost if you just leave it for now. Heck, I dug ours out in February and went to Pensacola without doing the required spring oil change.

Hate to add to the list but if you do the tranny, why not the differential?

I change it cold and give it extra drain time. Like said by another poster...once you crank the engine, you circulate the oil that has already settled along with stirring up the sediment and other******that would otherwise drain out the plug hole. The problem with cranking the engine for a short period without going down the road is that it never gets hot enough for long enough to boil off any moisture that may have built up from condensation and you just end up circulating water through your engine.

And as far as changing before the trip? Most likely there wouldn't be any harm done if you waited until you return. Oils today are very resilient and don't break down nearly as fast as the oils of our grandfathers. And I've read that the rule of changing every 3,000 miles was created by the oil industry to sell more oil. No matter, it's still a good practice since in comparison to a new engine, changing the oil is cheap!

It's not that they wouldn't care, it is simply a fact of life. Not everyone does their own oil changes. For all those millions/month that drop their vehicle off for an oil change I haven't heard one class action suit against cold oil changes.

Oil is so much better as are the filters. What was true 50 years ago may not be the case anymore.

He may not need the tires :B

...but I do service my differential when the transmission is serviced.
