Outside Storage of Class C in the South-keeping critters out

Hi all! Please don't laugh at this question. We are new to the south, and new to camping in the south. We have had many different camping vehicles through the years and have always lived and camped in the Midwest. The really only issues we ever had to worry about were mice and maybe ants. And not much of an issue. Now that we live in South Carolina I am concerned about snakes and cockroaches (excuse me, Palmetto bugs) getting into the unit while it sits outside when we are not using it. I've heard these stories about snakes coming out of the console when people are driving and those nasty Pametto bugs get in everything. Any advise as to how to keep them out?
Thank you and your welcome for the chuckle.

  • Thank you all for your responses. I feel a little better now. We are not sure of where we are going to store it yet, but I do know where we won't store it!
We too had a snake show up on our porch this past spring (harmless) but long and unwanted just the same. We let him slither on to go kill other things we don't want. The thoughts of getting one in a trailer or motor home creeps me out.
  • We store outside under a cover in the Southeast. We occasionally have roaches, but if you do a great job of keeping the food out they will have nothing to attract them. Also, don't heat or cool the coach (let it be the same temp outside as inside) and you'll reduce another incentive fro critters to set up house.

We park ours in a gravel area and keep the surrounding are free from grass, weeds, and leaves. I'd be hesitant to park in the grass and just let it grow or and/or die like some do.

I sometimes sprinkle some Sevin dust around the tires in the summer. I think it helps keep ants from exploring, but I can't say for sure.

Mice have been the biggest issue. They love the engine bay of the Ford V-10. This can be a problem even with garage or covered storage. I check frequently for signs and set a snap trap if I see anything. I catch _maybe_ one a season.

All in all, the convenience of having the coach at the house combined with the expense of a full garage make covered outside storage a fine choice for us.
  • We've had our MH stored in GA since we bought it in 2009. We've never had a snake or Palmetto bug in our camper. We've had Palmetto bugs in the house, but never the camper. We keep our camper in a storage lot that is completely void of trees or any vegetation, which is usually were Palmetto bugs like to be.

The best thing you can do is keep the RV away from vegetation and trees if possible and make sure the grass under the RV is kept low. Also keep food out of the RV that might attract them. Keep in mind Palmetto Bugs do not infest like other types of roaches, so if you see one, that is most likely all there is.

About the only thing we've had in our camper is spiders and it doesn't seem possible to keep those buggers out.

  • We've never had an issue with varmits or critters in the various motor homes. We do get an occasional outbreak of ants that crawl up the power cord. Simply spray the inside of the MH with household bug spray and do the same for all the storage areas. Keep the grass cut around the MH if you park it on grass. If you are really concerned about snakes the you can get snake repellant at many home stores like lowes.

There is a difference between roaches and palmetto bugs. Palmetto bugs are much bigger.

Now, I have had two snakes show up in my home which of course is a bit disconcerting, but both have been friendly ones.

    Welcome to Dixie.
