Possible Over Heating Allison Tranny (UPDATE)

Hi Folks,

I need some advice or just some feel good info. Earlier this week we had a medical emergency that required us to stop our trip to Alaska and head back to AZ. Thursday evening we had reached Jackpot AZ with no problems. I monitor the engine and transmission temps on our 400 ISL Cummins and Allison transmission and the temperature difference is usually no greater that a few degrees. Yesterday as we were arriving in Las Vegas we had a lot of surface traffic and the transmission temperature got as high as 218 degrees with the engine setting at 199 - 201.

Is this normal for driving in traffic? I plan on doing a full transmission fluid replacement when we get to AZ, but that's another 360 miles.

Any issues that you can think of?

Thanks in advance for your responces
  • Greyghost, sorry to hear of the new problem, hope all works out the best that it can.

  • Thanks for all of the replies. I thought it was probably OK but wanted to check with the experts.

Now I have another problem that will require a tow. We were heading towards Phoenix about 10 miles north of Wickiup and my front air bags deflated. I got pulled over and raised the front end to give me access to the ride height adjustment. When I let it down the right front jack blew a seal and my hydraulic fluid is now all over the shoulder of the road.

I use Progressive road side assistance so I'll be letting you know how they do.

It took us one half hour to get finished with Progressive and they told us they would find us a tow.

Bottom line - An hour later a supervisor called back and stated that they were unable to find someone to accept the job due the remote location. The supervisor did monitor our progress for the next 100 miles or so.

I was able to get the jack up about three inches and we made it the 230 mile home. Now it's just a matter of repairing or replacing the jack.
  • Normal. If you are stuck idling due to a serious jam just shift into neutral and the temps will come down.
  • I had that happen just once a couple of years ago while in Quartzsite, AZ. As you guys know, Quartzsite becomes a Mecca of RV's in January every year. I was leaving after spending 5 days with my RV buddies on BLM land. I crossed the hwy 95 bridge going over the I-10 going north (no exit on that crossing), made my left on to the main street so that I could catch the exit for the I-10 going West back to Palm Springs.

I was just inching in all that traffic of which I'm sure it took at least 30 minutes. About halfway through this ordeal, I noticed my trans temp going up too. I think it went into the low 230's where normal is around 200-205 on our unit. The engine normal is about 197-199.

Once I finally made it to the I-10 entrance ramp everything went back to normal. Funny thing, it only happened that one time. Every time I wash the coach (myself), I will spray the radiator area. But, there are so many things stacked in front of each other I do the best I can. I've never crawled underneath to spray 'out' instead if 'in' but I might one day.

  • Not unusual since the transmission was under a load and the cooling air flow was reduced by the slow speeds. Don't know if you are using Transynd fluid or the old Dex III but I know my transmission runs a few degrees cooler with Transynd. If you do replace your fluid, make sure that they use Transynd, which is what Allison recommends for all of their transmissions now.
  • Normal. When in stop and go, when at a LONG stoplight, place the transmission in neutral. In gear in 1st and low speeds in 2nd is the only time the torque converter is not locked up on your Allison 6 speed.

By surface traffic do you mean more stopping than going? IF so you will add extra heat from the torque converter having to slip while stopped. When I see I'll have to stop for more than a minute or two I'll shift into Neutral which helps to cool the tranny, not heat it. 218 is not going to hurt anything.
  • Na- you are ok. No Problem with the temp that high. Now if it goes over 250 degrees for a time- then worry about it.
I ran my temp up to 250 degrees climbing a hill in 1st gear( the trans won't lock up in 1st). After I got parked and the engine and trans cooled down I smelled the trans fluid and it wasn't burnt- it smelled like new.
  • Is the transmission cooler full of bugs? We had to pull over last year and find a car wash I could stick the front of the truck in to power wash all the bugs out. So many it jammed everything full, what a mess! Good luck
