Power awning self retracts - why?

While camping, my Dometic Weather Pro power awning retracted itself three nights in a row (in the middle of the night). Really surprised me the first time it happened, makes quite a racket when you're sound asleep! Anyway, each night it happened I checked outside and there was no wind, so I don't think that's why it self-retracted. Any ideas about this?

  • Well gang,
Learn something every day. The first thing here is, determine just which wind sensor one has. I've got the little "cap" on the roof that was the original one but, not in use any more. Now, with the Weather Pro unit I've got, I have the sensor in the tip of the awing arm, next to the motor. It's the kind that detect flapping of the fabric and shaking of the arm. So far, that sensor has worked flawless, each and every time.
We've left the awning out while bicycle riding around the paved park and noticed some light to moderate gusts of wind every now and then. When we got back to our rig, the awning was nicely retracted. So far, so good.

  • We've had this problem too. We learned that it was due to some kind of electrical spike or if boondocking, it happens when our batteries get low.

I see you have a 2013 model....Check your Newmar product spec sheet that has the Dometic serial #.
There is a NHTSA recall for certain serial #'s... seems the motor will act on is own -- here's a brief description.
“This potential condition affects only the power awning products manufactured between February 13, 2013, (306XXXXX serial #) through April 9, 2013, (314XXXXX serial ..”
My awning deployed while driving !! It was one of the listed serial #'s
  • I've same system with wind sensor. They are also sensitive to electrical spikes/drops that often occur at night during reduced power useage on the electrical grid.
  • I had the same thing happen, though not always at night.
I researched it a bit and here is my story ..... It turned out the motor was weak and finally did die completely and needed to be replaced. I concluded that it was retracting because the motor was getting weak and it was giving me a warning that the wind sensor was not going to be able to work and don't rely on it. My RV has so many kinds of warnings to keep me safe that it seemed that this is just another of them! Replaced the awning motor and no more retractions on it's own.
  • The wind sensor on the Weather Pro system has settings for wind speed that can be adjusted. When the sensor reads that mph of wind, it activates the system to retract the awning. If the weather is calm, and expected to be calm during the night. We usually leave our awning out/extended to reduce the amount of dew on our table in the morning. We set the awning to retract at 10mph. If we think it may get windy, we always retract the awning in at night. We nearly always retract it when away for more then a couple hours.
We were staying up on Lake Superior the past few weeks. Nice and calm when we went to bed. Woke up at 130 am by the sound of the awning retracting. By 3:30am the wind was gusting pretty hard at times, so we pulled in the slide on the windy side of the coach to protect the slide cover awning. Late morning we went for a walk around the campground and one large coach had a torn slide cover.
  • I've had two power awnings. The first one had the wind sensor which had a mind of it's own. I kept the sensor turned off.

When we bought our current coach I had them install a power awning but not the wind sensor.

I don't need no stinkin wind sensor!!!

Because we've had two awning blown off we NEVER leave the campground with the awning extended. And at night I retract the awning...don't really need the shade at night nor the noise and problems if the wind comes up during the night.

We were in Boise a few weeks ago and a severe wind storm came out of nowhere in the afternoon and destroyed three awnings of people who weren't home.
  • Camper Ken,
We also have the "Weather Pro" system for our awning too. Now, nor sure about yours but, ours has three switches, just inside the door, besides the big bank of switches already there from the factory. The first switch is for Power. Incidentally, they're all Three Position Toggle switches. As stated the first one is for Power. Now, it can be in Straight power with no wind control, or Power with wind control or, Off.

The second switch is for severity of wind selection. High, medium or low wind for the sensor. The third switch is for extending or retracting the awning. Now, just curious here, do you have the same setup in switches? If so, what's your Wind severity switch set at?

  • Mine was doing that during the day also, trying to relax and the thing would retract. I turn off the wind sensor to keep it from having a mind of it's own. I do retract it when we go to bed if we are in an area that is wind prone.
