Real World V-10 Mileage Report

Just returned from a 3K mile trip from Orlando Fl, to Pittsburgh. Then to NY, Connecticut, then up to Maine for a week. Then Maine back to Florida. Everything went very very well.

We were pulling our 2013 Wrangler 4 door, and averaged 7.2 mpg in the hillier country, and a solid 7.5 mpg in the flatlands of the South.

I believe I could have done better than the above numbers. I was travelling between 65 and 70, instead of my normal 63 mph.

  • For a gasser towing a TOAD that's darn good MPG!!!

Happy camping!!! See y'all down the road!!!:)
  • The last trip we made, using two different RVs, one with the 2011 version and the latter with the 2013 version of the V-10, I decided to do all the driving and set cruise right at 65 over DW's objections. She likes the 55-57 range. We upped the mpgs while towing from just over 6 to 7.5 while towing. Found that the unit was not shifting down as quickly on long upgrades, especially if I'd watch the grade and slightly increase the speed prior to hitting the grade. Back when we had an '02 Class C with a V-10, we would average between 8.5 and 10, but we did not two with that unit. Just a note, since we are towing an '07 Focus, I leave the tranny in the tow/haul position nearly all the time.
  • That makes me happy, i've been planning a trip to Florida next May and i'm using 7.5 as an estimate for mileage. I won't be towing so i'm thinking i may do better...
  • This was actually better than I expected. When we had our DP with an 8.3 ISC, we got 9.5 mpg whether we were towing or not. With the 2012 F53, I was expecting no better than 6.5 - 6.8 when towing. So, 7.2 - 7.5 was a pleasant surprise.
Of course, I'm not a "power driver". I avoid jack rabbit starts, heavy breaking, and variations in cruising speed whenever I can.
  • Seems as if most RVs range between 7.0 - 9.0 mpg.....with the larger units getting similar mileage to the smaller ones (not counting "B") due to diesel engines and gearing.
I resign myself to 7.0 and hope for the 9.0:B

Pretty typical F-53 mileage. After 13,000 miles on a 2011 22K F-53 chassis my overall average was 7.0 when towing and 8.0 when not towing. I’m assuming my mileage will be similar on the 2014 24K F-53 that I have on order.
