Residential Refrigerator Installation

I have a 2002 Allegro Bus and will remove my Norcold Gas/Elec unit out and replace it with this Samsung 18 cu ft house refrigerator. All measurements are OK except for the height but not a problem because I have a small cabinet under the old fridge that will accomdate the height from 63" to 70". My Norcold quit cooling and I was starting to smell amonia so I bit the bullet.
My question (I am having a RV specialist install)is there anything that I am not aware of before the work begins which will be next week maybe?

Thanks for your help and really appreciate this forum which has not only help in knowledge but hundreds of dollars savings.!!!

I have been researching fridges as our Norcold just went out. We fully intended to get a residential anyway. As I know for a fact from personal experience that Frigidaire won't honor the warranty if installed in an RV, I thought I'd check with Samsung just to see what they say. I also wanted to check with them on the MSW vs PSW. Well, as typical of anything nowadays, I got 2 completely different responses from Samsung. My first response from them said that no, ALL of their fridges won't work well on MSW, and no, they will not honor the warranty if installed in an RV. I then got model specific with them - the model DANO lists above - as I knew the RF197 had been discontinued, and that response from a different person, I'm sure, was that it draws 1600 amps each time it starts up, so if your MSW supplies that, that yes, it will work, and they will honor the warranty.

I believe the model above is smaller - around 18 cf, but DANO got a good price. DANO, I'd like to know where you found it, please.

Uh 1600 amps ? I think you need to question them again there is no way
  • Simple mistake
It's Watts...people around here unfamiliar with power terms do it all the time
They say amps when they mean volts or watts

1600 watts approx 15 amps at 120vac..output from inverter
But it's 140 amps input at 12.5vac from the batteries

Edit.. got to watch those decimal points

agree. at 110-volts, 1600-amps would mean the fridge needs 192000 watts to function. I found the electrical specs online that indicate the fridge consumes 11.6-amps at 115-vac. and that would be the maximum draw.

remember, the compressor does not run continuously. energy consumption is rated at approximately 450,000-watts (450kw) per year. assuming it runs for an entire year (365 days) and all else being equal the fridge will consume 1233-watts per day or an average of 51-watts per hour which is less than 1-amp per hour at 115-vac.

I have an interest the home refer as well. My question is how do you get the unit in the coach? As I look my 07 Hr ambassador even with doors off I can't see other than through the windsheild a way to get the unit in.
    Thoughts?

Ours fit in the window behind the driver's seat. Easily removable with some help on the inside and outside, just a lot of screws to remove. (with the doors removed) Good luck.

    dreamer.
  • I brought my 23.5 cu. ft. Samsung in through the entrance door with doors on the refer removed. It was actually narrower than the 12 cu. ft. norcold that went out the same door. The samsung was also lighter and will run on a MSW inverter as a Samsung tech. told me that the input voltage is converted to DC voltage and the entire refer runs on DC. I installed a 1000 watt PSW inverter before finding this out. I had 2 control panels go bad and thought it was the MSW inverter causing it, but after installing the inverter the second service tech said no it was a bad panel design which has been upgraded and no more problems for 4 yrs. I leave the refer on 24-7-365. I have 4 trojan 6 volt house batteries and after a day of driving then watching tv a couple of hours a few lights on and a cpap machine all night my battery voltage will be about 12.4 in the morning, so this 23.5 cu. ft. side by side is very efficient.
PM me if you have any questions.

Those numbers jive with or are close to our 22 cubic foot residential. According to the inverter readout and the fluke clamp on it draws just under an amp when running...varies between 95 and 105 watts on the Samlex display. Our peak starup current is around 6 to 8 amps. Seems to vary.

Thanks for the correction, and yes, I meant watts. :o
  • The secret here is to be sure you purchase a "counter depth" refer which in most cases has a 24" box depth measurement with the doors removed. This also will reduce how far the refer protrudes into the living space. In my case the doors are close to the hall way and I didn't want any interference.

  • I installed my new Samsung House Fridge in my RV, very satisfied....I purchased it through Plessers.Com out of New York....Free shipping no sales Tax. The measurements are the same as the RF179.
Width was the same as my Norcold (approx 32.5") the depth was (24.5")and the height was the only difference....current Norcold was (63,5") and the Samsung was (70.0"). I had a small cabinet at the bottom of my original Fridge so that gave me the additional height I needed plus if you have to you can also get some from the top if needed.
Plessers.Com has all different Brands, Types and Models to choose from and if I had waited another week the prices went down $200.00 so I would have payed around $950.00 for this 18 cu ft.
My only restriction was the depth.

Thanks for posting. What was the make and model number.
