Roof Sealing

Well the sealant on the Fiberglass roof needs replacing and I started on it today with the plan being to replace sealant with the tape where logical. Got started and noticed the screws on the magic vent and the shower skylight seem to be not full screwed down. I keep catching the putty knife edge on under the screws.

Is this normal?

An area near the corner of the shower skylight seems to dip and catches water. Haven't had a leak there but wonder is I should pull off the skylights and stuff the roof to remove the dip. Or just reseal it with the 401 sealant.

Thoughts?
  • Almost every screw under sealant was basically finger tight. Most have a 1/8 gap... New skylight on order.
  • I hear you Fred, would have loved to not touched it but the number of cracks in the sealant and the amount of sealant there already lead me to believe it needed to come off. The coach is 9 years old and I don't think it has ever had anything more than a wash up there. I do have a scheduled maintenance appointment next month and am thinking about having them replace it just to avoid the chance of damaging the roof if I try to attempt to remove the low spots which in the front edge is more than 1/2 an inch.
  • The Eternabond will seal up the skylight cracks - at least until you decide to get a new one. I would not have messed with it - but I guess that is a moot point now. .

You can buy Eternabond in 2", 3 and 4 and 6" wide as well as 18" wide if you are really good at installing it! I would have placed the 4" wide Eternabond near the low section of the roof, so the seams are out of the standing water. What water stands in the center of the tape will not matter, or leak in.

    Good luck!

You might also want to check out EPDM roof sealant, I made a post about it a while back. It is working great on my RV, and will fill in low spots.

    Fred.
  • Feels like the screws were in stalled with a screw gun without a torque setting and are not really tightening. Sealant will keep them in place. They were finger tight (loose would be a better description) and up about an 1/8th inch.

I have a 3" roller for putting the tape down, but I know one it is down it doesn't come up easy.
  • The putty knife catching on the screws could just be due to the shape of the screw head. Typical pan-head screws are chamfered slightly on the bottom of the head.

Cracking the skylight from (apparently) over-tightening the screws is not normal, or at least not proper. It sounds like it may be a good idea to put a flat washer underneath the screw when you do your repair to spread the stresses out some more (or alternately use a screw with a bigger head, such as a lathing screw, but I think the washers would be preferable in this case). If you can find some sort of stiff but flexible washer (nylon or something), that may be even better.
  • i have been spending alot of money on eternabond tape this summer. It's amazing how small of a crack that water will go work its way into into.
  • Great... Got the sealant off the skylight and most of the screws had shattered the front edge when they installed it. There are a few shattered on the rear too. Looks like I will be pulling it off so that question is moot.
