Satellite Radio Antenna Placement on a Class C

Does anyone here have experience placing the ‘pill box’ antenna on a Class C motorhome?

I have been using an XM Satellite Radio Module in my truck with the antenna placed on the center of the dash at the base of the windshield and this gave satisfactory reception. It even worked well when I pulled my 5th wheel as it could ‘see’ the southern sky even when coming north on I 95 from Florida.

I was wondering if this type of installation would work in a Class C MH given the cab overhang on these units. Would it ‘see’ the southern sky when travelling north? Would a front bumper installation work or will I have to pierce the roof. Maybe I could feed it through the roof where the TV coax comes through.

Has anyone here any experience with the antenna placement?
  • I put my GPS on the dash and it works fine. I expect the Sat Radio would work fine on the dash too.
  • I caulked a square of magnetic metal to the top of the fridge vent and snaked the wire up through the vent. On a previous unit I made a little steel bracket to hold the antenna just under a crank-up plastic vent dome.
  • Thanks GMTOYMAN every one likes someone who has ALL the answers.

I did search satellite radio before I posted and did not find YOUR WEALTH OF INFORMATION!!!

Adios syonarra I am out of here. I guess I have a life and do not read the forum much!!!

  • Our works just fine located on a shelf in the cabover entertainment center EXCEPT when there was 20 inches of snow on the roof. :)

When going to AK I put it in a cabinet above the dinette angled towards the rear. Worked much better than on the dash.
  • I put mine on top. I caulked a piece of metal to the roof and ran the wire through the door into the cab. I used enough of the wire to be able to secure it so that it is pretty much out of the way. Works great and I have had no unusual signal disruption
